PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Agriculture this class is accountable for performing the mostcomplex responsibilities in livestock and poultry health and epidemiology. Theposition acts for the State Veterinarian in their absence.\r\n
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
\r\n Delivers veterinary care and consultation regarding the prevention, control,and eradication of contagious and infectious diseases, and the regulation of livestock programs within the state;\r\n Performs Animal Health field duties throughout the state;\r\n Conducts field investigations of animal and poultry diseases, including datacollecting, sample testing, and diagnostic assessments;\r\n Reviews rabies exemptions, import paperwork, Certificates of VeterinaryInspection and other documents for animals in the state;\r\n Facilitates disease control and eradication programs, including vaccinationsquarantine protocols, and disease surveillance efforts;\r\n Assists the State Veterinarian with compiling and reporting disease testingand surveillance activities for United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs and reportable diseases;\r\n May perform duties of State Veterinarian in their absence;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
\r\n Considerable knowledge of\r\n \r\n principles and practices of veterinary medicine with particular referenceto diagnosis and control of food animal and companion animal diseases;\r\n epidemiology of animal and poultry diseases;\r\n \r\n \r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n food safety and public health with respect to prevention of animal andpoultry diseases;\r\n recent developments in veterinary medicine;\r\n \r\n \r\n Considerable\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills.\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience in large animal veterinary practice.\r\n
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n\r\n Experience working with livestock or poultry species in a clinical, regulatory, or field based setting\r\n Experience conducting on farm disease investigations or diagnostic sampling\r\n Experience working with state or federal animal health regulations, including import/export and interstate movement\r\n Experience working with accreditation programs such as USDA APHIS Veterinary Accreditation or NPIP\r\n Experience preparing or reviewing Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVIs) or similar regulatory documents\r\n\r\n\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license to practiceveterinary medicine in the State of Connecticut.\r\n Incumbents in this class will be required to obtain federal certificationthrough the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant HealthInspection Service (USDA, APHIS) to conduct cervical and comparative cervicaltuberculosis tests.\r\n Incumbents in this class will be required to obtain federal certificationthrough USDA, APHIS as a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and maintain relevant registration(s) and/or certification(s).\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.\r\n\r\n
