A leading Japanese logistics company in the greater Chicago, Illinois area is seeking a Licensed Customs Broker / Brokerage Manager to join the team.
Job Overview
The Brokerage Manager oversees all customs brokerage operations at Chicago, ensuring compliant and efficient import processing. This role manages entry teams, communicates with government agencies and clients, and drives performance, compliance, and business growth. The Brokerage Manager ensures adherence to U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) regulations, oversees daily entry operations, and provides leadership in customs compliance and client service.
Responsibilities
Prepare, review, and file customs declarations, entry documents, and post-entry amendments in accordance with CBP regulations.
Classify products based on HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) codes and determine correct duty rates and trade program eligibility.
Ensure compliance with U.S. customs laws, import/export regulations, and partner government agency requirements (FDA, USDA, EPA, etc.).
Provide clients with regulatory guidance, compliance updates, tariff changes, and trade agreement applications (e.g., USMCA).
Coordinate with freight forwarders, carriers, government officials, and internal teams to facilitate timely release and shipment delivery.
Maintain current knowledge of customs law, trade regulations, and industry developments.
Manage customs audits, binding rulings, post-summary corrections, protests, and recordkeeping compliance.
Investigate and resolve customs-related issues, holds, or discrepancies.
Train staff on customs processes, compliance standards, and documentation requirements.
Maintain broker license in good standing, including CE requirements and compliance.
Requirements
Active U.S. Customs Broker License (mandatory)
Minimum 25 years of experience in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, or international trade compliance
Strong knowledge of:
Import regulations and CBP requirements
HTS, classification, and valuation rules
PGA regulations (FDA, USDA, DOT, FTC, etc.)
Incoterms and international logistics processes
Proficiency in customs brokerage systems & trade compliance software (e.g., ACE, ABI systems)
Excellent communication and client-service skills
Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and accuracy in data processing
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with global trade compliance or export controls (EAR/ITAR)
Knowledge of bonded warehouse and FTZ procedures
Prior experience handling customs audits and compliance programs (C-TPAT, ISF, etc.)
Multilingual ability (preferred but not required)
Bachelors degree preferred or equivalent experience
