The Office of the Utah Attorney General has an immediate opening for a criminal prosecutor in our Financial Crimes Division. The Financial Crimes Division is Utah’s frontline criminal unit dedicated to the ethical and rigorous investigation and prosecution of mortgage fraud and other major financial crimes committed within the state.

The division specializes in felony-level, multi-jurisdictional investment fraud and prosecutes complex schemes involving communications fraud, theft, and racketeering. Division attorneys and investigators apply their expertise to unravel sophisticated financial crimes and hold offenders accountable under state law.

Through aggressive prosecution and a focus on financial remedies and restitution, the division works to recover losses for victims and restore confidence in Utah’s financial systems.

This position focuses on handling assigned cases, conducting legal research and writing, and presenting the State’s case at all stages of the criminal process, including jury trials. The attorney will provide legal counsel to law enforcement, offer recommendations, and facilitate decisions related to criminal matters. The role requires strong written and oral advocacy skills, the ability to work effectively in a professional team environment with other attorneys, support staff, and investigative agencies, and the capacity to manage an existing caseload immediately.

Responsibilities:

• Screens matters for criminal charges and prosecutes matters as assigned;
• Provides consultation, makes recommendations, gives appropriate advice, and facilitates decisions;
• Provides legal counsel and advises law enforcement as needed;
• Conducts legal research and writing, and presents the State’s case at every stage of the criminal process, including trying matters before juries;

Juris Doctorate required. Five years of experience in criminal practice is preferred. Prosecution experience preferred. Significant courtroom experience in trying felony cases preferred. The successful applicant will be expected to handle complex financial fraud prosecutions, including cases alleging securities fraud, real estate fraud, consumer fraud, tax fraud, and mortgage fraud.

Applicants must possess excellent written and oral advocacy skills, the ability to work in a professional team environment with other attorneys, support staff, and investigative agencies, and have the experience and ability to immediately take over an existing caseload. Membership in the Utah State Bar in good standing is required. The position is located in Salt Lake City. Travel is required as incumbents will need to engage in criminal litigation and other legal proceedings throughout the State.
