Job description

Position Overview

CLFC Healthcare & Communications is seeking a Board Certified Clinical Perfusionist to join our team supporting cardiovascular surgical services at a VA medical center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This is a unique opportunity to practice perfusion in a tropical, island setting while serving the Veteran community across the Caribbean Healthcare System. The position supports elective cardiac surgical procedures and patient evaluations on a long-term contract with a base year and four option years.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and manage cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) equipment during open-heart surgical procedures, ensuring safe and effective extracorporeal circulation throughout each case
  • Perform autotransfusion services including intraoperative cell salvage, blood component processing, and hemoconcentration to optimize patient blood management
  • Conduct pre-operative assessments of patients scheduled for cardiac surgery, reviewing medical history, laboratory values, and imaging to develop individualized perfusion plans
  • Monitor and manage anticoagulation protocols during bypass, including ACT testing, heparin dosing, and protamine reversal
  • Maintain and calibrate all perfusion equipment including heart-lung machines, heater-coolers, blood gas analyzers, and cell salvage devices per manufacturer specifications and institutional protocols
  • Document all perfusion activities in the patient medical record in compliance with HIPAA and VA documentation standards
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, including case reviews, equipment maintenance logs, and adverse event reporting
  • Collaborate with cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, and OR nursing staff to ensure coordinated intraoperative care
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited perfusion education program
  • Current Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) certification through the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP), or board eligible with CCP exam scheduled
  • Active, unrestricted license or certification as required by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
  • Minimum two (2) years of clinical perfusion experience in a hospital-based cardiac surgery program
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
  • Proficiency with modern perfusion systems, including centrifugal and roller pump technologies
  • Experience with cell salvage and autotransfusion techniques
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Autotransfusionist (CAT) certification through ABCP (dual CCP/CAT certification)
  • Experience in a VA or federal healthcare environment
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency
  • Experience with minimally invasive cardiac surgery perfusion techniques
  • Familiarity with VA electronic health record systems (CPRS/VistA)
Compensation and Benefits
  • Employment Type: Independent Contractor
  • Hourly Rate: $105 - $140/hr (commensurate with experience and certifications)
  • Schedule: Full-time equivalent, elective surgical schedule (Monday - Friday, day shift)
  • Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico (on-site)
  • Contract Duration: Base year with four (4) one-year option periods
