What is an Image Signal Processing job?

An Image Signal Processing (ISP) job involves developing and optimizing algorithms that process raw image data from sensors to enhance quality, extract meaningful information, and prepare images for display or further analysis. Professionals in this field work with technologies like noise reduction, color correction, and edge detection to improve image fidelity. They often collaborate with hardware and software engineers to implement these algorithms in cameras, mobile devices, and other imaging systems.

What are some typical projects or responsibilities for professionals in Image Signal Processing roles?

Professionals in Image Signal Processing often work on projects involving the development, implementation, and optimization of algorithms for image enhancement, object detection, and noise reduction. Their daily responsibilities may include coding and testing new image processing pipelines, analyzing image data sets, and collaborating with hardware or software engineering teams to integrate solutions into larger products. The role typically involves iterative problem-solving and regular communication with cross-functional team members such as machine learning engineers, product managers, or quality assurance specialists. This collaborative environment provides excellent opportunities for learning and professional growth, especially as new imaging technologies and applications continue to emerge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Image Signal Processing position, and why are they important?

To excel in Image Signal Processing, a strong background in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related discipline is essential, along with solid programming skills in languages such as C/C++, Python, or Matlab. Familiarity with tools like OpenCV, MATLAB, and experience with embedded systems, GPUs, and relevant certifications are often highly valued. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication are important soft skills in this field. These competencies are critical for developing and optimizing complex algorithms that process visual data accurately and efficiently for products in industries such as technology, automotive, and healthcare.

ISA is a leading provider of real-time signal and image processing systems for the government and remains dedicated to the development of high-performance signal processing solutions. ISA works in all phases from concept design, through development and integration, to operations and maintenance of challenging mission critical systems, with offices in Richardson, TX and Aurora, CO.
As the Signal Processing Engineer - ISA, your main responsibilities will be:
  • Digital signal processing: FFTs, FIR and IIR filtering, spectral estimation, quantization, etc.
  • Estimation theory: Cramer Rao lower bounds, least-squares estimators, maximum likelihood estimation, etc.
  • Detection theory: Neyman-Pearson theorem, matched filters, coherent versus non-coherent detection, etc.
  • Probability theory: Gaussian random variables, random processes, chi-squared random variables, etc.
  • Radar principles: coherent versus non-coherent radar signals, the cross-ambiguity function, geo-observable generation and geolocation
  • Communication theory: digital modulation types, equalization, concept of spread spectrum, etc.
  • Geolocation: geo-observable generation, TDOA, AOA, etc.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) desired
Your skills and qualifications:
Essential education and experience:
  • Matlab: able to prototype algorithms
  • C/C++: able to translate algorithms to code
  • UNIX scripting, agile processes, configuration management
  • Ability to develop readable and efficient code
  • Cognizant of computers/SW architecture (cache, heap versus stack, etc.)
  • Familiar with revision control (GIT, Jira)
  • The ability to span the spectrum from the theoretical algorithm development to a real time implementation. The best candidates can both understand the theory as well as implement algorithms in C/C++.
  • Strong communication skills, including documentation and presenting results internally and externally to the customer (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint experience).
  • Team player that enjoys working in a small company environment. Willing to learn.
Desired:
  • Degree: BS/BA
  • Major(s): Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics
  • Experience: 5-10 years OR Master's Degree
