Image Segmentation information

What are the common challenges faced in an image segmentation role?

Professionals in image segmentation often encounter challenges such as dealing with low-quality or ambiguous images, managing large datasets, and ensuring consistency in labeling across various data sources. Staying up to date with rapidly evolving algorithms and tools in computer vision is also important for maintaining best practices. Effective communication with data scientists, engineers, and project managers is key for understanding project requirements and delivering high-quality segmentation results. Overcoming these challenges not only helps produce more accurate models but also contributes to personal skill growth and deeper team collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in image segmentation, and why are they important?

To excel in Image Segmentation, you need a solid background in computer vision, machine learning, and data annotation, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Python, OpenCV, TensorFlow, and specialized annotation software is typically required. Attention to detail, collaborative mindset, and effective communication are important soft skills in this position. Mastering these abilities ensures precise segmentation work, efficient teamwork, and contributions to projects in fields such as healthcare, autonomous driving, and digital imaging.

What is an image segmentation?

An Image Segmentation job involves developing algorithms and models to partition digital images into meaningful regions or objects. Professionals in this role often work with computer vision, deep learning, and artificial intelligence to improve image analysis. Tasks may include data annotation, training machine learning models, and optimizing segmentation accuracy for applications like medical imaging, autonomous vehicles, and industrial automation. Strong programming skills in Python and experience with frameworks like TensorFlow or OpenCV are typically required.

Job description

We're a well-funded start-up. You'll get a chance to wear many hats, be a part of a growing team, and have the potential for exciting financial and career growth.
Here's what sets us apart. We've set our sights on some of the biggest challenges facing biology today. We're amassing a world class team of engineers, scientists, team builders and problem solvers to tackle these challenges heads-on. We're passionate about developing the next generation technologies that will unravel the complexities of biology.
This is a unique opportunity to build, be part of an exciting start-up and be surrounded by good humans who are super capable, humble and down-to- earth.
The Senior Director, Artificial Intelligence will lead our Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) efforts. AI and ML are integral to multiple aspects of the operation of our platform and represent a key strategic area for Cellanome. This position will grow our existing efforts in these areas and identify future opportunities to leverage AI and ML to further our goals. This is a leadership position with the Computational Biology team and will collaborate closely with R&D, Software Engineering and Product Development through both Research and Product Development programs. This role will provide leadership and vision, while working hands-on in the implementation.
Essential Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Design, develop, train and productize cutting-edge Deep Learning models, particularly in the area of image processing for tasks such as image segmentation, classification, unsupervised and semi-supervised feature extraction.
  • Research and develop models for integrating paired imaging and transcriptomic data from the same cells.
  • Design and develop infrastructure for tracking model learning and performance.
  • Develop and implement a multi-year strategy for application of ML and AI-based methodologies to core aspects of the operation of our technology, and interpretation of the resulting data.
  • Identify new opportunities to deploy ML and AI-based methodologies based on conversations with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Source, hire and mentor junior team members, fostering an environment of healthy teamwork and continuous learning.
  • Work collaboratively with other software teams to integrate ML and AI-based methodologies into our broader software ecosystem.
  • Keep up with the rapidly changing AI and ML landscape to identify new opportunities.
  • Ability to work in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to travel up to 5% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel at times.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD in Engineering, computer science, computational biology or related fields with 15 years experience; or a Master's degree with 18 years experience; or a Bachelor's degree with 20 years experience; or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years of leadership experience, including hiring and mentoring junior team members.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Deep Learning-based methodologies for image analysis is a must. The successful candidate will have extensive familiarity with object detection, instance segmentation and feature extraction models and will have demonstrated experience training and tweaking them.
  • Excellent programming skills and intimate familiarity with commonly used Deep Learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow etc.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with biological imaging data (e.g. live cell microscopy, histopathology).
  • Experience working with foundation models for single-cell transcriptomics.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $288,000- $330,000/year. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors including job related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
