What is the difference between Image Data Scientist vs Computer Vision Engineer?

AspectImage Data ScientistComputer Vision Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Data Science, Computer Science, or related fields; knowledge of machine learning and image processingBachelor's/Master's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; expertise in computer vision algorithms and software development
Work EnvironmentData analysis teams, research labs, AI-focused companiesSoftware development teams, robotics, autonomous vehicles, tech companies
Employer & Industry UsageTech firms, healthcare, retail, research institutionsAutonomous vehicles, robotics, surveillance, augmented reality

While both roles involve working with images and machine learning, an Image Data Scientist primarily focuses on analyzing and interpreting image data to extract insights, often working with large datasets and statistical models. In contrast, a Computer Vision Engineer develops algorithms and software to enable machines to interpret visual information, often involving real-time processing and deployment in applications like autonomous vehicles or AR systems.

What is an image data scientist?

Image Data Scientists are professionals who specialize in analyzing, processing, and interpreting image data using advanced techniques such as machine learning, computer vision, and statistical analysis. They work with large datasets of images to extract meaningful insights, develop algorithms for image recognition or classification, and help solve real-world problems in fields like healthcare, autonomous vehicles, and e-commerce. Their role often involves cleaning and labeling image data, building predictive models, and collaborating with software engineers and domain experts to deploy solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by image data scientists when working with large-scale image datasets?

Image Data Scientists often encounter challenges related to managing and processing large volumes of image data, such as ensuring data quality, dealing with imbalanced classes, and handling high computational demands. Efficient data labeling and preprocessing are crucial, as poor annotation can impact model accuracy. Additionally, collaborating closely with engineers and domain experts is key to setting up robust data pipelines and validating model outputs in practical applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an image data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Image Data Scientist, you need expertise in computer vision, machine learning, statistics, and a strong background in mathematics or a related field, often supported by an advanced degree. Proficiency with programming languages like Python, deep learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), and image processing libraries is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, creativity, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting results and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills enable the development of accurate image analysis solutions, drive innovation, and ensure the successful implementation of models in real-world applications.

Job description

"In 36 months, agentic AI systems will be an operating reality across major institutions. We intend to be central to it." - Dr. Jim Rebesco, Cofounder and CEO, Striveworks
The government's demand for AI is growing far faster than the systems required to support it. Fewer than 15% of federal AI programs have reached sustained production, despite billions of dollars invested. The models perform in testing, but they degrade in the real world. And when performance drops, trust goes with it.
Striveworks was built to solve that problem.
What you'll build
Since 2018, we have delivered the most trusted AI systems operating in real-world use cases-providing a layer of assurance underneath hundreds of deployed models that monitors performance, manages drift, and sustains systems long after they leave the lab.
As a Data Scientist, you will be a core contributor to the projects, products, and direction of the company. Working as part of a team of data scientists, machine learning engineers, software engineers, and DevOps engineers, you'll develop and validate machine learning models and custom analytic algorithms applied to image, video, text, geospatial, time series, structured, and other data. You will design AI-based solutions, based on both agentic and traditional approaches, for cloud and edge environments. You will sense what customers need, identify evolving demands, and translate that feedback into actionable input for our product teams. The work extends to the field, with mission-critical deployments and direct customer contact.
What it's like here
We lead with trust, treat each other with respect, and use candor consistently, kindly, and constructively. We care deeply about our work, and we find genuine satisfaction in doing it well. Above all, we take ownership-because we feel the weight of collective results personally. We are looking for people who share these values and are eager to put them into practice.
What we're looking for
  • A BS degree in computer science, machine learning, mathematics, or a related discipline and 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency in machine learning and data science, with demonstrated application to image data, video data, or agentic systems
  • Proficiency in implementing and analyzing data structures and algorithms
  • Excellence in Python and knowledge of TensorFlow, PyTorch, and/or scikit-learn
  • Exposure to software development life cycle and tools
  • Active Secret (or above) US security clearance and US citizenship

The following isn't required, but we'd love to see it:
  • An advanced degree in computer science, machine learning, mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Experience deploying machine learning and data science solutions to production environments
  • Exposure to DevOps and to cloud infrastructure
  • Experience processing a variety of unstructured data types (e.g., image/video, text, telemetry, graphs, or other)
  • Experience implementing ETL pipelines, data pipelines, and/or workflow automation
  • Experience developing software in a systems programming language (e.g., Go, Rust, C++, Java, Scala, etc.)

You will be hybrid or on site at our Austin, Texas, office. This role requires travel up to 30% of the time.
Compensation
The anticipated base pay range for this position is $140,000-$165,000/year. Striveworks' total compensation package includes a competitive base salary, equity grants, and cash bonuses.
Benefits include:
  • Medical/dental/vision insurance
  • Voluntary life, long-term disability, accident, and hospital indemnity insurance
  • HSA and FSA (including dependent care FSA) plans
  • 401(k) plan
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Paid parental leave

Ready to build systems that work for a mission that matters? Let's talk.
