Job description


We are currently looking for a Histotechnologist for a multi-year contract position supporting CDC.Since the CDC supports a wide cross-training initiative, ideally, we would like to find a Histotechnologist professional that has experience with molecular testing, specifically to conduct In Situ Hybridization and image analysis for formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues.Again, this is an ideal combination of skills and individuals with solid Histotech experience are encouraged to apply.
Under this contract, the professional will independently providing the support outlined below:
  • Process and embed humanand animal tissue samples daily.
  • Section paraffin-embeddedtissue blocks daily.
  • Prepare histologic slidesusing Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) stains daily.
  • Perform histochemicalspecial stains weekly.
  • Operate and maintainhistology laboratory equipment daily. This includes operating and changingreagents on tissue processors and automated stainers according to theestablished schedules, and cleaning processors, embedding centers, andmicrotomes after use.
  • File slides, blocks, andrelated worksheets daily. The total amount of filing will correspond tothe total number of blocks cut and the number of tests (H&E andspecial stains) performed daily.
  • Enter test results andwork-related information into laboratory database daily for all sectioningand tests performed (H&E and special stains).
  • Perform various computingtasks daily using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access) to documentspecimen and test information, generate and update test request lists andworksheets, print labels, write standard operating procedures (SOPs), andperiodically create graphic displays (using PowerPoint) of workflow stepsand/or processes.
  • Perform quality assuranceand quality control activities daily (according to established standards)to ensure the proper handling of specimens, processing of specimens,labeling of specimens, use of laboratory equipment, and quality of testsperformed. This includes documenting all quality assurance and qualitycontrol activities on related worksheets and forms.
  • Periodically preparewritten and/or verbal scientific summaries of testing methods used andtasks completed for assigned projects and presents summaries to teammembers and colleagues.

Qualifications:
  • Associate'sdegree (Bachelor Preferred) in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or otherrelated science field.
  • 2-3years of Histotechnician experience in performing duties outlined above.
  • DesirableSkills:
    • Strongorganizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
    • Abilityto retain and build upon knowledge base.
    • Abilityto independently identify potential issues or discrepancies with caseinquiries or submissions.
    • Previousexperience working in a CLIA environment.
    • Goodoral and written communications skills.
    • Strongability to work as a team member.
  • Abilityto pay attention to detail.
  • Abilityto communicate verbally and written technical and non-technicalinformation.
  • Abilityto maintain laboratory records and files.

This is a full time / 40 hours per week position.The individual will be working onsite each day (telework may be possible in the future but this is not guaranteed).This position offers the accrual of paid time off, paid federal holidays and is eligible to enroll in our health benefits program.
