What is an illustration intern?

Illustration Interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily with companies or creative studios to gain hands-on experience in the field of illustration. They assist professional illustrators and design teams by creating drawings, graphics, and visual assets for various projects such as books, advertisements, websites, or marketing materials. This role helps interns develop their artistic skills, learn industry-standard tools, and build a professional portfolio while gaining insight into the workflows and expectations of the creative industry.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an illustration intern typically expect to work on?

As an Illustration Intern, you can expect to be involved in a range of creative projects such as assisting with digital illustrations for marketing materials, supporting senior illustrators with concept sketches, and contributing to visual assets for social media or websites. You may also help with revisions based on team feedback and participate in brainstorming sessions. This role often provides opportunities to collaborate with graphic designers, marketing teams, or product managers, giving you valuable exposure to real-world workflows and creative processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an illustration intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Illustration Intern, you generally need strong drawing skills, a solid understanding of design principles, and a portfolio showcasing your work, often supported by coursework in art or illustration. Familiarity with digital illustration tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator) is typically expected. Creativity, adaptability, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively and interpret feedback. These abilities are vital for producing high-quality illustrations that align with project goals and client expectations.
