Job description

Scientist, Analytical Development and Mass Spectrometry
Position Overview

Sutro Biopharma, Inc. is looking for a Scientist to join our Analytical Development group to support chromatography and mass spectrometry analyses for antibodies (mAb), bispecific antibodies (bsAb), antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), immunostimulatory antibody drug conjugate (iADCs) and cytokine derivatives.
Responsibilities
  • Develop chromatography assays for testing of recombinant proteins such as antibody derivatives
  • Develop mass spectrometry assays for testing of recombinant proteins such as antibody derivatives
  • Process and interpret data from assays to communicate and present to internal and external colleagues
  • Author and review SOPs, protocols, and technical reports
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert for chromatography and/or mass spectrometry for the analytical group.
  • Perform routine chromatography and mass spectrometry testing to support analytical upstream, downstream, and formulation process development teams.
  • Qualify assays and support technology transfer to Sutro QC, and to partner and contract testing laboratories
  • Work with moderate supervision while also working collaboratively within the Analytical group and across functional groups.
  • Contribute to product characterization studies.
  • Communicate data both verbally at group meetings and through written documents and reports. 
  • Engage collaboratively within Analytical Development, other functional areas, external partners, and CMOs
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot HPLCs and other separations-based instrumentation
     
Qualifications:
  1. Ph.D. in scientific discipline with 1-6+ years’ experience, or BS/MS in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or related scientific field and 8+ years of industry experience in the characterization of large molecule biologics is required
  2. Experience with operating and maintaining of HPLCs/UHPLCs and mass spectrometry instrumentation is highly preferred
  3. Proficiency with data processing software such as Chromeleon, OpenLab ChemStation, or Empower is preferred
  4. Understanding of some separation methods (Protein A/G/L, RP, IEX, SEC, HIC, HILIC) is preferred.
  5. Experience with method development, qualification, and method transfer to a QC environment is a plus
  6. Knowledge of alternative detection modules such as FLD, MALS, ELSD, and/or CAD is a plus
  7. Knowledge of additional analytical techniques such as iCIEF, mCE-SDS (Caliper), and/or CE-SDS is a plus
  8. Flexibility to work on multiple projects and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment is essential

The anticipated salary range for fully qualified candidates applying for this role at Sutro Biopharma’s California based locations will be $117,000 - $139,000 (not including bonus, equity, and benefits). The final salary offered will be dependent on several factors that include and are not limited to relevant previous experience, job responsibilities and duration of experience, the type and length of experience within the industry and education.
