Job description


KEY OBJECTIVE
Provides industrial hygiene (IH) risk assessment and loss control IH consultative service (anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control) to large and complex accounts/clients in order to assist in the selection and retention and remediation of profitable business and to control occupational disease (OD) exposures that have or may lead to underwriting losses in insureds and to meet the needs of larger, more complex sold service customers as defined through service instructions and local contacts, including more complex and technically demanding exposures and controls.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
โ€ข Assess customers, insured's or prospective insured's operations to determine scope and type of business, processes, materials used and products produced/services performed. Anticipate and recognize actual and potential OD exposures even in complex situations.
โ€ข Determines adequacy of OD hazard controls in operations/processes through interview, onsite observation, loss/incident report review, audits of existing loss control programs, analysis of policy, programs or procedures and through evaluation (sampling, modeling or calculations) and comparison to existing applicable standards or by developing standards where none exist.
โ€ข Analyzes top management attitude, commitment and involvement in managing and controlling exposures and losses.
โ€ข Identifies strengths and weaknesses of clients/accounts and relevant programs, determines probability of loss, determines needed risk improvement(s) and necessary strategy and makes a professional recommendation on the acceptability of the risk (insured accounts sells to contact and informs underwriter; on sold service customers informs client management and sells need for risk improvement).
โ€ข Determines the appropriate loss control intervention(s) based on the accounts' hazards and loss control problems, and recommends them to the account's management. "Sells" the account's management on implementing the intervention using sales methods.
โ€ข Effective in setting and/or implementing loss reduction actions and measuring the impact on profitability or reduction in OD loss potential. Able to use technology to provide state-of-the-art risk assessment and control methods to clients. Assists clients and insureds on implementation of interventions.
โ€ข Able to manage and provide service to all but most complex and demanding work in territory, set priorities and servicing strategies, and develop risk improvement methodologies.
โ€ข Acts as a strategic partner with Account Managers, H&S Consultants in territory, and regional company and Claims operations. Under direction of AVP - Industrial Hygiene & Safety, works with those partners in development of business plans and goals, providing IH services to anticipate, recognize/identify, evaluate and control of OD exposures in book of business or in sold service clients facilities within the assigned territory or in other areas as requested or needed.
โ€ข Acts as a technical resource on industrial hygiene and occupational disease exposures for Account Managers, H&S Consultants, Claims personnel (depends on level of expertise); underwriters, and insured's as well as sold service customers.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports directly to the AVP - Industrial Hygiene & Safety of H&S.
SCOPE
The role of Senior Industrial Hygiene Consultant and their support of the underwriting and sold service processes and company customers are integral to the profitable growth results of the aligned business. Interfaces with BDMs, AMs, H&S Consultants, company and underwriting on a variety of company businesses (underwritten and sold service). Fulfills sold service customers' needs, as defined by the service instructions and local contacts input to attract and retain these customers and the revenue they generate.
Requirements
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
โ€ข Baccalaureate degree in industrial hygiene, environmental science, safety and health related sciences, engineering, engineering technology, or equivalent. Masters degree (or in process) in these fields preferred.
โ€ข Must have an applicable professional certification [i.e. Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) [preferred] or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) with IH background and ability to sit for CIH exam] or be actively pursuing designation/certification or pursuing an advanced degree in the area of expertise.
โ€ข Minimum of seven years work experience desirable in IH (10+ years preferred).
โ€ข Must possess a thorough knowledge of loss control principles and techniques. Excellent working knowledge of IH and OD exposures required.
โ€ข Ability to create and sustain relationships with H&S Consultants, H&S Management, clients and business partners (Underwriters, claims, etc.).
โ€ข Must have a good working knowledge relating to a wide variety of industrial operations and processes and the potential they present for OD exposures.
โ€ข Extensive and commanding knowledge of applicable IH standards, guidelines and codes relating to loss control for various hazards, industries, substances and operations.
โ€ข Working knowledge of insurance coverages, rating/pricing schemes and classifications, WC OD Claims handling and an understanding of underwriting requirements.
โ€ข Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Training ability and experience necessary.
โ€ข Must have a commanding ability to anticipate, recognize and identify OD hazards, evaluate exposures and controls in place or needed, and develop a strategy to sell top management on risk improvement.
โ€ข Proficiency with most recent versions of Windows, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint computer skills is preferred.
