Job description

Location: Detroit Metropolitan Area
(Hybrid: 3 days Work From Home, 2 days In Office)

About AlfaITG:

AlfaITG is a leading tooling company providing cradle-to-grave engineered solutions for the manufacturing industry incorporating Artificial Intelligence to enhance and differentiate both AlfaITG and our customers. We are a nimble, fast‐growing systems integrator that designs, builds, and installs automation systems for leading North‐American and global OEMs. We specialize in taking a customer's product concept from a clean sheet of paper and engineering and building a complete system to produce that product efficiently, within specified cycle times, and to the highest quality standards. Our multidisciplinary team marries mechanical design, controls, and manufacturing know‐how to deliver turnkey automation cells—on time, on budget, and production‐ready. In this role you’ll have the autonomy to drive entire engineering work‐streams, yet your voice will be heard at the highest levels.

Position Summary:

AlfaITG is seeking to build a team of highly motivated Design Engineers.

The Design Engineer team is the engineering “owner” for one or more active designs.

The team takes concepts from “ideas” to fabrication through concept, detailed design, Bill of Material, using all tools required to deliver a robust solution to our customer.

The team is the single point of contact to the Project Manager, Controls Engineer and Fabrication team for all engineering scope, schedule, and technical decisions.

Responsibilities of the team:

·       Drive and Execute 3‐D mechanical design (CATIA, NX, SolidWorks, AutoCAD 3D or Fusion 360) for weld/assembly tooling, EOAT, and guarding—using generative‐design or topology‐optimization plug‐ins whenever it gives us a lighter or cheaper solution.

·       Validation Models through required calculations – interface or use Finite Elements Analysis tools.

·       Validation Models through required simulations – interface or use Robotic, Plant simulation tools.

·       Leverage AI & data tools – e.g., using Python scripts or low‐code platforms to auto‐populate BOMs, using CoPilot/ChatGPT to draft FMEA actions, deploying vision‐based QA with open‐source ML models.

·       Coordinate cross‐functional engineering (controls, simulation, electrical) and be the single point of contact to the Project Manager for scope, cost, and tech decisions.

·       Track and report deliverables – maintain a live dashboard of design progress, risks, and issue burndown; present status in weekly stand‐ups.

·       Hands‐on validation – support build, runoff, and launch; crunch cycle‐time data, tune robot paths, and lead rapid PDCA loops on the shop floor.

·       Continuously improve our design standards—prototype new AI/ML tools, document lessons learned and roll out templated checklists that kill repetitive work.

As a team member, must have Requirements (critical experience & competencies)

·       From basic knowledge to 5+ years engineering experience designing manufacturing automation systems (material handling, robotic welding, assembly, conveyorized systems, etc.) for automotive or similar high-volume industries.

·       Demonstrated use of AI-enabled or script-based tools (eg. CoPilot in CAD, Python automation, ChatGPT configuration, etc.)

·       Previously used one of the 3D CAD and/or Calculation/Simulation system

Additional Minimum Qualifications (broader skills & credentials required for success)

·       Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering.

·       Proficiency in 3D CAD large-assembly management, plus solid understanding of GD&T and tolerance stack-ups.

·       Track record of leading multi‐disciplinary engineering efforts on projects ≥ $1 M.

·       Working knowledge of robotics (Fanuc/KUKA/ABB), PLC/controls basics, pneumatics/hydraulics, and tooling/design standards (GM Global, Ford F‐MC, Stellantis).

·       Comfortable with frequent context‐switching; able to juggle several projects and still hit deadlines.

·       Excellent written/verbal communication and confidence presenting to OEM engineers and plant leadership.

·       Eligible to work in Canada/USA and able to travel domestically & internationally.
