WILDFOWL magazine is a specialized publication dedicated to duck and goose hunting, featuring in-depth articles on techniques, gear, conservation, flyway forecasts, habitat reports, and more.
Nature of Work:
The Associate Editor for WILDFOWL reviews and edits text in articles and documents to be published in print or digital within projects as directed by the editor in accordance with approved style guides. The Associate Editor is also responsible for maintaining the WILDFOWL style guide and verifying its application across all WILDFOWL properties. The Associate Editor is responsible for ensuring quality, accuracy and consistency before release to print and digital media. This position will also assist the WILDFOWL editorial staff with creating, improving, and maintaining digital content to achieve set business and brand goals. Duties include ensuring all content follows SEO best practices, assisting in monitoring web traffic/metrics, and performing other digital-related tasks. The Associate Editor is required to film, edit, and post digital videos to all social platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and more. The Associate Editor will serve as on-camera talent when needed for digital videos. The Associate Editor will attend tradeshows, industry hunts, and other social functions on behalf of the brand.
Examples of work performed:
  • Proofreads at each stage of print production.
  • Checks for grammar, punctuation, usage, capitalization, style, layout, format, inconsistencies, redundancies and verifies facts as needed.
  • Write print articles, including feature stories and columns.
  • Check proofs against roadmaps provided by the production department.
  • Monitor compliance with the editorial production schedule.
  • Serves as photographer and videographer as needed while in the field and on assignment.
  • Assist with developing a content strategy that aligns with the business goals and objectives of the brand and company.
  • Collaborate with the brand and business teams to plan and develop website content.
  • Maintain a digital editorial calendar.
  • Participate in developing engaging web content, including proofreading, SEO fine-tuning, and publishing.
  • Write digital articles as needed.
  • Records and edit videos for social media including reels, shorts, and full videos.
  • Publish digital content to CMS following each brand’s schedule.
  • Work with other digital editors and content providers to ensure brand consistency and voice.
  • Create balanced, newsworthy (legal, politics, and conservation, etc.) digital content hunting in a fast-paced setting.
  • Keep up to date with SEO best practices.
  • Use reporting tools to analyze website traffic and user engagement metrics.
  • Assist brand managers with social media including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
  • Assist marketing teams with content distribution to social media and email newsletter platforms to increase web traffic.
  • Assist in ensuring legal compliance of content (e.g., copyright and data protection).
  • Attend company events, trade shows, and media events (approx. three weeks per year).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Minimum
    • BS/BA degree in Journalism, English or Creative Writing.
  • Preferred
    • Three (3) years of professional experience in magazine editorial procedures.
Competencies/Knowledge, Skills amp; Abilities
  • Knowledge in AP Style and proofreader’s marks.
  • Knowledge of HTML, affiliate marketing, and web publishing.
  • Able to be accurate under extremely tight deadlines.
  • Able to collaborate as an effective team member.
  • Able to communicate changes clearly.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the outdoors, outdoor sports and firearm-related subjects.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and a passion for searching out errors and correcting grammar.
  • Must have the ability to reprioritize tasks according to changing demands.
  • Ability to learn new programs, processes and systems quickly.
  • Experience using Mac computers, InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom, a CMS (Content Management System such as WordPress, video editing software, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
