The Teamย 

Theย Veterinarian works collaboratively withย themedical and operations leadership team to ensureย theย hospitalโ€™s overall performance inaccordance with allย theย medical standards set forth by our executive leadership and incompliance withย theย OVMEB veterinary practice act.ย 

The Positionย 

Theย veterinarianย is responsible forย providing day-to-day delivery of exceptional diagnostic, treatment and surgical services to animals served by Oregon Humane. As a state licensed DVM,ย theย veterinarian is also a primary care giver and must deliver exceptional servicesย in accordance withย Oregon Humaneย and state standards.ย ย Medical cases are both outpatient and inpatient withย theย majority being canine and felineย patientsย andย a small percentage being exotics (small mammals and birds) or other species.ย ย Additionalย responsibilities include providing clinical leadership to veterinary staff and student interns, as well as providing expert consultation to medical support staffย regardingย complex medical cases and decisions.ย

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESย 

  • Perform clinical and surgical veterinary duties inย a highย volume, high quality spay/neuter, general surgery, and comprehensive medical center. Patients include client owned animals, shelter ownedย animals,ย animals surrendered to Oregon Humane fromย theย public, animals in protective custody, and animals presented for care byย their owners or agents through programs atย Oregon Humane. Procedures include a wide variety of diagnostics, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, dentistry, general wellness, and medical cases.ย 

  • Communicate examination findings, treatmentย plan, and patient care alternatives to clients.ย 

  • Engage in financial conversations with clients, elevating discussionsย toย other team members as needed.ย 

  • Uphold team culture and values of quality, compassion, efficiency, teamwork, and responsibility.ย 

  • Provideย clinical advice on complex euthanasia decisions, as well as referrals from community partners.ย 

  • Provide mentorship and clinical guidance & oversightย regardingย complex medical, surgical, and euthanasia decisions to colleagues, interns, residents, and students.ย Guideย decision making when necessary, including during patient rounds & in all aspects of patient care.ย 

  • Work in partnership with other Oregon Humane departments to coordinate care and quarantine of infectious disease patients effectively and efficiently.ย 

  • Develop andย maintainย protocols and provide guidance to staff as needed.ย 

  • Participate in investigation of cruelty or neglect of animals and aid veterinary forensics andย humaneย law enforcement teams.ย 

  • Complete andย maintainย medical recordsย in accordance withย practice and state standards, documenting treatment plans, case summaries, and other communicationsย in a timely mannerย within veterinary practice software.ย 

  • Work withย Medicalย Director to resolve complaints about medical outcomes and/or decisions from veterinarians, clients, adopters, and other constituents.ย 

  • Provide leadership in clinical instruction of veterinary students and house officers in partnership with OSUfaculty andย Oregon Humaneย staffย 

  • Attend andย participateย in clinical rounds and provide support and direction during patient care discussions.ย 

  • Participate in other departmental and organizational meetings, media appearances, and events as requested.ย 

  • Provide direct professional contact with community practitioners to answer questions or to follow-up on concerns related to patient care and policiesย 

  • Bolster interdepartmental communication and partnerships through excellent communication and teamwork.ย 

  • Participate in Oregonย Humaneย organized responses to animal related emergencies andย participateย in special projects as requested.ย 

  • Work collaboratively withย shelterย medicine team, providing support as needed.ย 

  • Assistย all related internal and external departments as needed to supportย theย program, and perform other duties as requested by management.ย

  • DVM from an accredited academic institution.ย 

  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine inย theย State ofย Oregon or able toย acquireย within six months of hire.ย 

  • Able toย demonstrateย excellent surgery and medical diagnostic abilities in a high-volume veterinary medicine facility.ย 

  • Able to recognize, diagnose,ย treatย and properly quarantine infectious disease in a high-population environment.ย

Workย Environmentย Conditionsย & Physical Requirementsย 

This position interacts and collaboratesย willย all levels of the organization, includingย Oregon Humaneย staff,ย executive team members, donors,ย generalย public, external vendors, volunteers, and supporters. Contact and communicationย isย carried out through face-to-face, telephone and digital interactions. Excellent customer service skills are essential to success. Communication must be clear, understandable,ย professionalย and respectful in all circumstances.ย 

WORKING CONDITIONSย ย 

  • Work is performed in an office and medical center/animal shelter environment.ย 

  • Occasional weekend and evening work may beย required.ย 

  • Animal contact and related injuries may occur.ย 

  • Noise exposure varies and sometimes includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations.ย 

  • Pace of work is active and demanding, requiring a high degree of multitasking and ability to adapt to changing priorities while managing concurrent projects/tasks to completion.ย 

  • This position primarilyย residesย withinย theย Oregon Humaneย campusย which is open toย theย public. Contact with emotional people may occur.ย
