Security Officer – SD Humane – San Diego

Schedule

  • Friday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (El Cajon)
  • Saturday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (San Diego)
  • Sunday: 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM (San Diego)

Position Overview

We are seeking professional, service-oriented Security Officers to support San Diego Humane Society locations. This is a highly visible, customer-facing assignment. The Security Officer is often the first point of contact for visitors and is expected to provide a welcoming presence while maintaining a safe, orderly environment for staff, visitors, volunteers, and animals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a professional security presence to deter theft, vandalism, disturbances, and unauthorized access
  • Provide exceptional customer service; greet visitors and assist with directions, check-in procedures, and locating appropriate departments/services
  • Monitor entrances, lobbies, and public areas; support orderly flow of visitors and appointments
  • Observe, document, and report suspicious activity, safety hazards, and policy violations; complete clear written reports as required
  • Respond to incidents professionally using de-escalation and conflict-resolution techniques
  • Coordinate with site leadership and, when necessary, contact law enforcement or emergency services
  • Conduct routine patrols of assigned areas (interior/exterior as applicable)
  • Follow site-specific safety procedures related to animals (restricted areas, kennel protocols, visitor guidance)

Required Qualifications

  • Active California BSIS Guard Card (required)
  • Strong customer service skills and professional communication
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in emotionally charged situations
  • Ability to write clear, accurate, and complete incident reports
  • Reliable transportation and dependable attendance
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and perform routine patrol duties
  • Must be able to pass all applicable pre-employment screening, which may include background checks and/or drug testing consistent with applicable law and client requirements

Animal-Friendly Requirement (Special Requirement)

  • Must be comfortable working around animals (dogs, cats, and other animals) daily
  • No pet/animal allergies that would interfere with the safe performance of duties in an animal-care environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pepper Spray certification
  • Prior security experience in public-facing environments (retail, healthcare, municipal facilities, customer service)
  • Experience with de-escalation, conflict management, or access control
  • CPR/First Aid certification (plus)
