What is a human factors design engineer?

Human Factors Design Engineers are professionals who focus on optimizing products, systems, or environments to suit the needs, abilities, and limitations of users. They apply principles from psychology, engineering, and design to ensure safety, usability, and efficiency in the interaction between people and technology. Their work often involves conducting user research, developing prototypes, and performing usability testing to improve user experience and minimize human error. These engineers play a key role in industries such as aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and consumer electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human factors design engineer?

To thrive as a Human Factors Design Engineer, you need expertise in human-centered design, ergonomics, user research, and usually a degree in human factors, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with usability testing tools, human-computer interaction (HCI) software, and CAD or prototyping systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and attention to detail set individuals apart in this role. These skills ensure products are intuitive, safe, and effective for end users, directly impacting usability and customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges human factors design engineers face when integrating user feedback into product development?

Human Factors Design Engineers often encounter challenges when translating diverse user feedback into actionable design improvements, especially when balancing usability with technical or business constraints. They must prioritize feedback that enhances user experience without compromising safety, regulatory compliance, or product feasibility. Additionally, collaborating with cross-functional teams—such as engineering, product management, and marketing—requires effective communication to ensure user-centered recommendations are understood and implemented appropriately.

What is the difference between Human Factors Design Engineer vs User Experience Designer?

AspectHuman Factors Design EngineerUser Experience Designer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Human Factors, Psychology, or Engineering; certifications like HFESBachelor's or Master's in Design, Psychology, or Human-Computer Interaction; certifications in UX design
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, product development, healthcare, aerospaceWeb and app design, digital product development, consulting
Industry UsageManufacturing, healthcare, aerospace, automotiveTechnology, software, e-commerce, media

Both roles focus on improving user interaction, but Human Factors Design Engineers emphasize ergonomic and safety considerations through research and testing, often in physical or complex systems. User Experience Designers concentrate on digital interfaces, creating intuitive and engaging user experiences. While they share overlapping skills, their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

As a Human Factors Engineer (HFE) within ACE, part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of Human Integration experts, you will play a central role in ensuring that Blue Origin's space and ground systems are human-centered - actively prioritizing and integrating the capabilities, limitations, and needs of human users into processes, designs, and operations company-wide. Working closely with a Principal Human Factors Engineer, you will develop the HF frameworks, standards, and best practices that program-embedded HFEs and systems engineers across Blue Origin rely on to make human-centric design decisions. You will also provide direct HF support to ACE programs, grounding your enterprise work in real engineering challenges. This is a unique opportunity to shape how a next-generation space company thinks about and practices human factors engineering at scale. Passion for our mission and a commitment to crew and operator safety are essential.

Responsibilities:

Enterprise Standards (approximately 70%)

  • Partner with the Principal Human Factors Engineer to develop, document, and maintain enterprise-level human factors standards, methodologies, and best practices for cross-program application across Blue Origin
    • Develop: Blue Origin Human Integration Standard (with similarities to NASA-STD-3001 Volume 2); Astronaut Systems Design Guide; Handbooks: Human-Systems Integration (HSI), Task Analysis, Human Error Analysis, Worksite Analysis, Human-in-the-Loop Evaluations, and Operational Nomenclature Best Practices
    • Maintain: Blue Origin User Interface Standard; Ground Operability & Ergonomics Design Guide
  • Develop and deliver training materials and support for enterprise-level documents, enabling consistent adoption across programs and business units
  • Support development of AI tools to aid in application of human factors processes and principles
  • Maintain open communication and host or support regular review sessions with business unit stakeholders to gather input and drive continuous improvement of enterprise HF outputs

ACE Program Support (approximately 30%)

  • Serve as a human factors subject matter expert to program-embedded engineers and designers, providing guidance on human factors requirements (e.g., ergonomics, usability, workload, human error) and methodologies (e.g., task and human error analyses, worksite analysis, human-in-the-loop testing)
  • Apply human factors principles to ACE program activities, including requirements review, design evaluations, and human-in-the-loop (HITL) test support
  • Support the creation and review of task and human error analyses to inform design and operations decisions
  • Perform anthropometric analyses and ergonomic evaluations in support of program-specific design questions
  • Support human factors verification planning, including mapping requirements to verification events
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, design, and operations teams to integrate human-centered design principles into engineering workflows

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. in Human Factors Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Cognitive Systems Engineering, Psychology, or a related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of industry experience in human factors engineering or human-centered system design (preferably in aerospace, with familiarity with NASA-STD-3001)
  • Foundational knowledge across core human factors competencies, including: human performance and efficiency, ergonomics, safety engineering, task and human error analysis, human-systems integration, systems engineering principles, and human-in-the-loop testing
  • Demonstrated ability to develop clear written technical documents, guidelines, or reference materials
  • Experience conducting task analyses and/or human error analyses and human-in-the-loop testing
  • Ability to translate human factors principles and findings into clear, actionable engineering guidance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Graduate degree in Human Factors, Cognitive Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline
