Job description

JACKSON COUNTY, GEORGIA

CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: CORRECTIONS COUNSELOR

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to provide counseling services to the Jackson County Correctional Institute inmates. Tasks include counseling inmates, recommending evaluation of security changes, developing post release plans and parole summaries, conducting orientation activities, and assists in determining classification on work detail assignment. Assists in family crisis and death situations. Performs related administrative tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Provides counseling services to the Jackson County Correctional Institute inmates; counsels inmates regarding their adjustment to being incarcerated, work detail assignments, and various personal issues.

Conducts routine security reviews; recommends evaluation of security changes.

Performs related evaluation tasks; develops post release plans and parole summaries; completes parole review summaries, rehabilitation plans and work performance review documents; conducts orientation activities, assists in determining classification on work detail assignment.

Assists in family crisis and death situations.

Performs related administrative tasks; receives, reviews, prepares and processes various reports and documents; files related paperwork and maintains filing system; inputs data as required into State computer programs; processes and mails social security card applications.

Attends all counselor training and seminars as required.

Assists in security operations when needed.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's degree in Psychology, Counseling or related field with a minimum of one to two years related experience providing a working knowledge of Department of Corrections guidelines and federal, state and local laws pertaining to the incarceration of persons, knowledge of modern corrections practices and procedures, knowledge of counseling and evaluation techniques, knowledge of symptoms of substance abuse and methods for assessing stages of development, skill in interviewing, and the ability to conduct behavioral observation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. BCOT (Basic Correctional Officer Training) to be a certified corrections officer through Georgia Department of Corrections.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to assist persons by action or interaction in carrying out specialized medical, therapeutic, counseling, or related procedures.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties, which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
