What is a human computer interaction designer?

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Designers are professionals who focus on creating user-friendly interfaces and experiences for digital products and systems. They study how people interact with computers and technology, and use this knowledge to design products that are intuitive, efficient, and accessible. HCI Designers often collaborate with engineers, product managers, and researchers to ensure that the end user's needs and behaviors are central to the design process. Their work can include designing websites, apps, software interfaces, and even physical devices, all with the goal of improving usability and satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human computer interaction designer?

To thrive as a Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Designer, you need expertise in user-centered design, interaction design, usability principles, and typically a degree in HCI, design, or a related field. Proficiency with prototyping tools (such as Figma or Adobe XD), usability testing platforms, and knowledge of accessibility standards are commonly required. Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help HCI Designers understand user needs and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams. These skills are essential to create intuitive, accessible, and engaging digital experiences that meet both user and business goals.

How does a human computer interaction designer typically collaborate with engineers and product managers during the design process?

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Designers frequently work closely with engineers and product managers to ensure that user-centered designs are both technically feasible and aligned with product goals. Throughout a project, designers participate in cross-functional meetings, share prototypes, and gather feedback to refine their concepts. Effective communication is key, as HCI Designers must translate user research findings and design rationales into actionable insights for technical teams. This collaborative approach helps create intuitive interfaces that meet user needs while fitting within project constraints.

About the job

At Google, we "Focus on the user and all else will follow." Our Interaction Designers transform complex tasks into intuitive, easy-to-use experiences for billions of people. From creating user flows and wireframes to building mockups and prototypes, you will envision and bring product experiences to life with an inspired, refined, and magical feel. You will join our multi-disciplinary UX team, collaborating with Engineering and Product Management, leveraging user insights to create industry-leading products.

As an Interaction Designer, you'll apply user-centered design methods to craft industry-leading user experiences from concept to execution, working with design partners to evolve the Google design language to build beautiful, innovative products.

As a Senior Interaction Designer, you will lead the design of developer experiences (DevEx) and interaction paradigms for next-generation XR platforms across headlocked and spatial ecosystems. This role requires a designer with exceptional tooling and framework thinking—someone who can seamlessly bridge the gap between integrated development environment (IDE) tooling workflows in Android Studio and declarative UI framework architectures in Jetpack Compose, Jetpack Glance, and Glimmer. Operating at the intersection of developer tools, UI design systems, and spatial computing, you will define how developers construct, adapt, preview, and deploy multi-context applications across wearables, that are both 2D headlocked and world anchored spatial displays.
