What is an HPC project manager?

HPC Project Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing projects that involve High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. They coordinate multidisciplinary teams, manage project timelines and budgets, and ensure that HPC resources are effectively utilized to meet research or business objectives. Their work often includes collaborating with scientists, engineers, and IT specialists to deliver complex computing solutions, while also handling communication between stakeholders and ensuring compliance with organizational and technical requirements.

How does an HPC project manager typically collaborate with technical teams and stakeholders during a project lifecycle?

An HPC Project Manager works closely with cross-functional technical teams—such as systems engineers, software developers, and data scientists—to coordinate project timelines, clarify requirements, and resolve technical challenges. They act as a bridge between stakeholders and technical staff, ensuring that expectations are aligned and that deliverables meet both performance and business objectives. Regular communication, status updates, and agile management practices are essential for successfully navigating the complexities of HPC projects, which often involve rapidly evolving technologies and high-stakes deliverables.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HPC project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HPC Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a background in computer science or engineering, and experience with high-performance computing environments. Familiarity with project management tools (like MS Project or Jira), HPC cluster management systems, and relevant certifications such as PMP or Agile are highly valuable. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help in coordinating technical teams and managing stakeholder expectations. These competencies ensure that complex HPC projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required technical specifications.

With our ingenuity, drive and deep curiosity we discover new insights, innovations, and solutions that efficiently and responsibly resolve complex natural resource, digital, energy transition and infrastructure challenges. Job Details We are seeking an experienced HPC Technical Project Manager / Delivery Lead to join our Technical Projects Group. This role will own end‑to‑end delivery of complex HPC and infrastructure programmes across our global landscape, ensuring predictable execution, strong governance, and high‑quality outcomes. The successful candidate will combine solid HPC and infrastructure understanding with proven delivery leadership, stakeholder engagement, and coordination across architects, engineers, operations, and clients. Operating as the central point of accountability, the role manages planning, scheduling, risk, dependencies, and service transition, while supporting operational readiness. Recognized as a trusted delivery lead; engages senior stakeholders to drive execution decisions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own end‑to‑end delivery of HPC and infrastructure projects, encompassing initiation, planning, execution, governance, and transition into operations, while ensuring delivery outcomes align with business objectives, client commitments, and platform strategy.
  • Act as the primary interface between clients, internal technical teams, and governance forums, ensuring clear communication, timely decision‑making, expectation management, and alignment across stakeholders throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Coordinate and lead HPC architects and senior engineers across multiple workstreams, ensuring dependencies are managed, responsibilities are clearly defined, delivery activities are synchronized, and technical decisions are progressed efficiently.
  • Manage project schedules, risks, issues, dependencies, budgets, and delivery milestones, proactively identifying constraints and implementing mitigation plans to protect timelines, quality, and delivery commitments.
  • Ensure robust delivery governance, reporting, and operational readiness by establishing appropriate controls, producing clear delivery artefacts, and supporting effective service transition, operational handover, and post‑delivery review.
Team Leadership Responsibilities
  • Provide delivery leadership and direction to assigned HPC architects, engineers, and delivery resources, ensuring projects are executed in line with agreed scope, quality standards, and delivery commitments.
  • Support the development and execution of delivery plans, objectives, and priorities, balancing competing demands across multiple programmes while maintaining predictable and transparent delivery outcomes.
  • Act as an escalation point for delivery, dependency, and cross‑team issues, driving resolution through structured decision‑making, collaboration, and risk management.
  • Represent the delivery team in internal and client‑facing forums, providing clear status, forward‑looking insights, and recommendations to support timely decisions.
  • Support management as required by providing leadership cover, guidance, and continuity across delivery activities.
  • Serve as a trusted delivery authority within the department or region, providing oversight, coaching, and assurance across project execution and delivery governance.
Skills & Competencies
  • Essential: Demonstrated experience delivering complex technical programmes within HPC, infrastructure, or large‑scale IT environments, with a clear understanding of delivery governance and lifecycle management.
  • Strong understanding of Linux‑based infrastructure and HPC platforms, enabling effective engagement with architects and engineers and informed decision‑making.
  • Proven ability to manage senior stakeholders, clients, and partners, translating complex technical delivery topics into clear, business‑focused communication.
  • Strong planning, prioritization, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams in fast‑paced environments.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, with the ability to identify risks early, drive mitigation strategies, and resolve delivery challenges collaboratively.
  • Desirable: Experience delivering cloud, DevOps, or hybrid infrastructure programmes.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with ITIL principles, service transition, and operational readiness models.
  • Desirable: Experience working within regulated or mission‑critical production environments.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Significant experience delivering HPC, infrastructure, or complex technology programmes, with accountability for scope, schedule, quality, and stakeholder outcomes.
  • Experience working closely with technical, operations, and business teams to ensure successful transition from project delivery into steady‑state operations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to present delivery status and recommendations to senior and executive audiences.
  • Detail‑oriented, delivery‑focused, and comfortable operating within matrixed, global teams.
Why Work at Viridien?
