Equine Care Team Member

Houston SPCA | Equine amp; Farm Animal Program
Hourly Rate: $19.00

At Houston SPCA, our Equine Care Team Members are hands-on advocates for horses and farm animals with unknown histories and unique needs. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, values teamwork, and brings both skill and heart to animal care.

What You’ll Do

As an Equine Care Team Member, you’ll play an active role in the daily care and preparation of horses and farm animals on their journey from intake to adoption. Your work directly supports animal well-being, public trust, and Houston SPCA’s lifesaving mission.

You will:

  • Care for horses and farm animals daily, including feeding, cleaning, and maintaining a low-stress environment
  • Handle and work with horses of varied health, training, and behavioral backgrounds
  • Observe animals closely for signs of illness or injury and assist with treatments as directed by veterinary staff
  • Support equine intake, medical procedures, training assessments, transports, and adoptions
  • Prepare horses for adoption through handling, socialization, and training
  • Maintain clean, safe facilities and properly disinfect assigned areas daily
  • Assist with animal transport, including loading and hauling horses as needed
  • Engage professionally with adopters and the public, explaining Houston SPCA programs, policies, and adoption benefits
  • Help monitor inventory of food, supplies, and medications
  • Contribute to general farm maintenance and collaborate across teams at both the Houston and Hempstead locations

What You Bring
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 18 years of age
  • 3+ years of experience working with horses (rescue experience strongly preferred)
  • Professional horse-handling skills, including halter training and experience with young or unhandled horses
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of equine health, breeds, diseases, and medical care
  • Experience working with farm animals is a plus
  • Ability to drive a truck and trailer and transport horses
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License; must be insurable under Houston SPCA auto policy
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work variable or unscheduled hours
