Overhead Crane Inspector & Field Service Technician

Job Summary

Rhino Tool House is seeking an experienced Overhead Crane Inspector & Field Service Technician to perform inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on overhead cranes, hoists, and lifting devices at customer facilities. This role operates in active industrial environments and is critical to safety, regulatory compliance, equipment reliability, and customer satisfaction. The position requires strong technical capability, thorough documentation, and professional customer interaction.

Key Responsibilities

Inspections & Compliance

  • Perform frequent and periodic inspections of overhead cranes, hoists, and lifting equipment in accordance with OSHA, ANSI B30, and CMAA standards.
  • Inspect mechanical, electrical, and structural components to identify deficiencies, safety concerns, and compliance issues.
  • Clearly document inspection findings, recommended corrective actions, and compliance status in detailed inspection reports.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of applicable safety codes, standards, and regulations.

Service, Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform on-site repairs, planned maintenance, and corrective work on crane and hoist systems as directed by the Service Supervisor or Service Manager.
  • Respond to emergency breakdown calls, including after-hours and weekend support as required.
  • Conduct advanced electrical, mechanical, and structural troubleshooting to determine root causes of equipment failures.
  • Perform limited on-site adjustments, functional checks, and repairs when safe, authorized, and within scope.

Customer & Internal Communication

  • Communicate inspection results, repair actions, and equipment condition professionally with customer representatives.
  • Review completed work with customers and obtain sign-off on service and inspection reports.
  • Maintain regular communication with the service office and provide daily status updates as required.
  • Identify repair, replacement, or upgrade opportunities and forward information to service management.

Documentation & Asset Management

  • Accurately complete daily paperwork including service reports, inspection reports, time tickets, and expense reports.
  • Maintain service vehicle inventory, tools, forms, and literature at appropriate stock levels.
  • Ensure all company equipment, vehicles, and tools are maintained in accordance with manufacturer and certification requirements.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and uphold company quality and safety standards.

Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational, technical, trade school, military, or crane training preferred.
  • NCCCO Crane Inspector certification or equivalent preferred; willingness to obtain certification with company support considered.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of overhead crane inspection and/or service experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179, ANSI B30 standards, and CMAA guidelines.
  • Proficient in electrical theory (AC/DC), including troubleshooting up to 480 VAC and three-phase motor control systems.
  • Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs) preferred.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Comfortable working at heights and lifting/pulling up to 75 lbs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office and digital reporting tools.
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to travel as required.

Work Requirements

  • Ability to work varied schedules including overtime and on-call rotations.
  • Travel to customer facilities as required.
  • Ability to work in active industrial environments.
  • Must successfully complete background check, physical, drug screen, and E-Verify.
  • Maintain a clean driving record, adhere to DOT compliance requirements while operating company vehicles. Obtain DOT Health Card (Medical Examiners Certificate).
