As of Sep 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for house dog sitter in the United States is $16.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.46 and $18.99 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a house dog sitter?

House dog sitters are individuals hired to take care of dogs and sometimes other pets in the owner's home while they are away. Their responsibilities often include feeding, walking, playing with the dog, administering medication if needed, and ensuring the pet's general well-being. In addition to pet care, a house dog sitter may also perform light household tasks such as collecting mail, watering plants, or maintaining the security of the home. Hiring a house dog sitter allows pets to remain in a familiar environment, reducing stress and anxiety. This service is ideal for pet owners who travel frequently or need to be away from home for extended periods.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a house dog sitter?

To thrive as a House Dog Sitter, you need basic animal care knowledge, experience handling dogs, and often a background in pet first aid or animal behavior. Familiarity with pet monitoring apps, home security systems, and possibly pet sitting certifications like those from Pet Sitters International can be valuable. Strong communication, reliability, and a calm, patient demeanor help build trust with both pets and owners. These skills ensure pets remain safe, healthy, and comfortable while owners are away, fostering confidence and repeat business.

What challenges do house dog sitters face and how can they be managed?

House dog sitters often encounter challenges such as adapting to unfamiliar home environments, managing dogs with varying temperaments, and maintaining consistent routines for feeding, walks, and medication. Effective communication with pet owners before and during the assignment is essential, as it helps clarify expectations and provides insight into the pet's behavior and needs. Being organized, adaptable, and proactive in handling issues—such as unexpected health problems or anxiety in pets—can ensure a smooth and positive experience for both the sitter and the dog.

House Dog Sitters primarily provide in-home care, including overnight stays, ensuring pets are cared for in their familiar environment. Pet Walkers focus on exercising pets through walks, often during the day. Both roles require pet care knowledge but serve different needs. Understanding these differences helps pet owners choose the right service for their pets.

Is it hard to become a house dog sitter?

Becoming a house dog sitter generally requires basic knowledge of pet care, responsibility, and reliability. Experience with animals and good communication skills can improve chances of securing jobs, but formal certifications are not usually required. The job often involves flexible scheduling and attention to the pet's needs.

Job description

Part-Time Dog Sitter / Overnight Pet Care

I run a small, home-based dog-sitting business and am looking for a dependable, responsible, and trustworthy person to help care for dogs when I need additional coverage.

I currently need someone who is definitely available September 19–21 and October 2–7, with the opportunity for additional ongoing/as-needed work after those dates.

The dogs stay in my home rather than in a kennel environment, so it is very important to me that they have plenty of companionship and feel comfortable and cared for while they are here. I am looking for someone who genuinely loves dogs and enjoys spending time with them, not someone who simply wants to stop by, feed them, and leave.

Pay & Schedule

Overnight/Extended-Stay Care: $25 per dog, per night

Overnight stays are strongly preferred. Ideally, you would stay at my house overnight with the dogs and spend a good amount of time with them while you are there.

If you cannot spend the night, you can still provide coverage by staying at the house for several hours at a time so the dogs have plenty of company.

Short Check-In: $100 for a 90-minute visit

There may also be times when I only need someone to come by for a dedicated 90-minute check-in. These visits pay $100 and would include letting the dogs out, feeding them if needed, checking water, spending time with them, and making sure everyone is happy and settled before you leave.

What I’m Looking For

Most importantly, I need someone who is:

  • Extremely dependable and responsible
  • Trustworthy and comfortable being in my home
  • A genuine dog lover
  • Patient and comfortable caring for multiple dogs
  • Good at following individual care instructions
  • Communicative and responsive
  • Available for occasional/as-needed work
  • Able to provide reliable transportation

Because clients are trusting me with their dogs, I need to be able to completely trust the person helping me care for them. If you commit to a date or time, I need to know that I can count on you to be there.

This is not a traditional full-time position. It is flexible, occasional work and could be a great fit for a college student, remote worker, retiree, or someone with a flexible schedule who would enjoy earning extra money while spending time with some great dogs.

There is also the potential for more regular work for the right person as my dog-sitting business grows.

To Apply

Please tell me a little about yourself, your experience with dogs, your general availability, and why you think you would be a good fit.

Please also confirm whether you are available September 19–21 and October 2–7 and whether you would be comfortable staying overnight.
