Hourly Technical Writer information

What does an hourly technical writer do?

An hourly technical writer creates clear and concise documentation, such as user manuals, guides, and instructions, on an hourly wage basis rather than a salaried position. Their main role is to translate complex technical information into easily understandable content for various audiences. They often work with subject matter experts, use specialized writing tools, and may be hired for short-term projects or ongoing needs. This arrangement offers flexibility for both employers and writers, allowing for work to be done as needed.

How does working as an hourly technical writer differ from a salaried position in terms of workflow and team collaboration?

As an hourly technical writer, your workflow is often more project-based and flexible compared to salaried roles. You may handle multiple assignments for different teams or clients, requiring you to quickly adapt to various documentation styles and subject matters. Collaboration is typically done through scheduled check-ins, virtual meetings, or project management tools, with a strong emphasis on self-motivation and time management. While you may not always be embedded long-term within a single team, strong communication skills are essential to clarify requirements and ensure deliverables meet client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly technical writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly Technical Writer, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, often supported by a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with documentation tools like Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, and content management systems, along with knowledge of style guides such as APA or Chicago, is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that technical documents are accurate, user-friendly, and delivered efficiently to meet project demands and client expectations.

What is the difference between Hourly Technical Writer vs Contract Technical Writer?

The choice depends on project scope and employment preference.

Are hourly technical writers still in demand?

Hourly technical writers are still in demand as companies seek clear, concise documentation for products and services. Skills in tools like Markdown, Adobe FrameMaker, and content management systems, along with the ability to adapt to remote work, enhance employability in this flexible role.

Can you do hourly technical writing part time?

Hourly technical writers can often work part time, depending on employer needs and project scope. Many technical writing roles offer flexible schedules, allowing for part-time arrangements, especially for freelance or contract positions that require skills in documentation, editing, and tools like Markdown or Adobe FrameMaker.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP) PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND TECHNICAL SERVICES
Addendum #1
Indefinite Delivery / Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) Single Award Task Order Contract (SATOC)
August 14th, 2026
  1. The previous submission deadline of August 24th, 2026 is extended three days to August 27th, 2026.
  2. Regarding Native/Tribal owned scoring, does it require the prime to be Native/Tribal owned, or can subs contribute to this score?

YTT will provide AN/AI scoring based upon the participation of both the prime and subs at their discretion - the intent is for proposing firms to be actively performing meaningful portions of the work. The intent is not for AN/AI qualifying firms to apply as prime applicants for the purposes of scoring preference points.
  1. Could you provide a brief description of Project 2 - Ankau Culvert Replacements?

Tasks 1-6 already describe the project scope. No additional narrative is able to be provided at this time.
  1. Will Alaska USFWS AOP design criteria be used?

After award, the proposing contractor will work with the Tribe on providing funding and funding requirements. It is anticipated that the selected consulting team must verify land ownership and confirm which Alaska USFWS AOP criteria apply. They should provide the criteria they determine to be correct in their professional judgment and in the best interests of the project and project funding requirements.
  1. What does the (2) after "Experience of Key Staff and Personnel" indicate? Is this the number of pages or number of staff?

The "(2)" indicates the minimum number of key staff members to identify.
  1. Are the 8 content pages allocated flexibly, or do any sections (cover letter/page, resumes, key staff) count toward the limit?

The 8 content pages can be allocated flexibly amongst the required documents.
  1. Are the cover page and/or cover letter included in the 8-page count?

The cover page and cover letter both count toward the 8-page limit.
  1. The solicitation identifies this as an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) Single Award Task Order Contract (SATOC). However, there is some language that alludes to the potential for multiple firms to be involved: "the selected engineering firm or firms," "selected consultant(s)," etc. Can you confirm whether this means multiple proposals will be accepted to provide services under the IDIQ or does this mean you anticipate that a single proposal may included multiple firms forming a single proposal.

YTT's intent is to select one proposal which may have multiple firms performing various aspects of the work beneath one prime consultant.
