Description

Designs and optimize system to move, store, and control materials within factories and warehouses. Layout out facility space, and integrate equipment (AMRs, conveyors, and automated storage units) to improve safety, reduce operational costs, and boost overall production efficiency.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Complete and update the PFEP and Materials Classification document for LM Manufacturing Materials department. 

Plan and direct activities concerned with design and development of protective packaging containers: analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for container.

Assist with improvement or automation of existing processes as required to optimize manpower and improved cycle time, material flow and ergonomics.

Ensures ongoing awareness of the latest packaging sources, techniques and industry trends.

Prepare Capital Expenditure Requests for new packaging, equipment, shipping pallet, or containers replacement as required for new programs or facility upgrades.

Investigate and define optimum logistics inbound from supply base, working annually to improve and reduce costs.

Developing appropriate pick and delivery solutions for internal delivery systems.

Utilize Industrial Engineering tools for operations and layout analysis; including time studies, ergonomic assessments, and throughput improvement.

Optimize Material Handlers utilization, evaluate at a minimum annually or when change impact occurs.

Responsible for developing material handling logistics (i.e. aisle layout, bin placement, dunnage assists etc.), layout of warehouse, and provide input on amount of space needed for storage.

Produce and update documents including work/user instructions, functional specifications, detailed design specifications, electrical and pneumatic schematics, etc.

Work collaboratively with Manufacturing Engineers, Maintenance Technicians, Production Supervisors and other internal staff.

Displays a positive attitude towards safety, works safely and follows all the Company's safety policies and procedures.

Reports all unsafe and unhealthy conditions or acts to management immediately.

Reports injuries, accidents, illnesses, near misses and property damage immediately to your supervisor.

Complies with all Health, Safety and Environmental standards in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Michigan Occupational Health & Safety Act.

QUALIFICATIONS:

5 years prior experience in an automotive material, or related environment. Experience preferred in areas of high-volume assembly, material flow, logistics and packaging experience, loss identification, and process improvements. University degree in Industrial Engineering or Manufacturing Engineer. Team approach to problem solving, strong verbal and written communication skills. Proven project and time management skills. Computer literate, including proficiency in DraftSight, Word, Project and Excel. Good knowledge of JIT, QMS, Process Flow, World Class Manufacturing, PFMEA and Continuous Improvement.

Education/Certification/Licensure:

Bachelor's degree in industrial Engineer/Manufacturing Engineer or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

Minimum of five (5) years of engineering experience in an automotive manufacturing environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Working knowledge of kaizen and/or Lean manufacturing techniques.

Superior verbal, written, and presentation skills required. 

The ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to management, employees, corporate personnel, suppliers, and the customer is essential.

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Documentation and organization skills.

Must be proficient with computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation software. 

Possess analytical ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 

Provide leadership; develop professional attitudes and lead by example. 

Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to establish good working relationships with employees, co-workers, management, and customers,

Proficient with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  

Working knowledge of AutoCAD.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Work performed in an office and manufacturing plant environments. Normal mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amounts of work at a computer. Frequently exposed to varying temperatures within plant depending upon external weather conditions. Frequently walks, stands, grips/grasps, bends/stops, crouches; and lifts and carries up to thirty (30) lbs within the manufacturing plant environment.
