Are you a physician looking to make a meaningful impact in addiction medicine while maintaining a healthy work-life balance? We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Medical Director Physician to provide clinical leadership and medical oversight for our Outpatient Opioid Treatment Program (OTP). This physician leadership role is ideal for candidates with an interest in Addiction Medicine, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Behavioral Health.

As Medical Director, you will oversee high-quality patient care, collaborate with an interdisciplinary treatment team, supervise advanced practice providers and nursing staff, and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations governing Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs.

Primary Responsibilities

The Medical Director is responsible for the overall medical oversight of the treatment center and serves as the clinical leader for all medical services provided within the program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct or oversee comprehensive medical evaluations, admission physical examinations, annual physicals, and readmission assessments in accordance with state and federal OTP regulations.
  • Review laboratory results with patients upon request and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Evaluate patients receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including methadone and other evidence-based therapies.
  • Issue medication orders and supervise medication management through verbal and written physician orders.
  • Provide physician consultation for urgent and emergent patient care situations.
  • Collaborate with Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Refer patients to Primary Care Physicians or specialists for medical conditions unrelated to substance use treatment.
  • Provide ongoing physician education, chart reviews, dosing reviews, and clinical training for medical staff.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance (QA), Performance Improvement (PI), and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Attend quarterly leadership meetings regarding strategic planning, patient outcomes, staffing, regulatory compliance, and quality improvement.
  • Assist with physician recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, and mentoring.
  • Ensure compliance with DEA regulations, SAMHSA guidelines, HIPAA, state licensing requirements, Medicare, Medicaid, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings to review patient progress and recommend treatment modifications.
  • Perform medication bottle labeling when required in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Consult with the Corporate Medical Director regarding complex clinical cases and medical policy.
  • Support additional clinical initiatives and physician leadership responsibilities as assigned.
Physician Leadership Responsibilities

Provide medical supervision and clinical oversight for:

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs)
  • Physician Assistants (PAs)
  • Registered Nurses (RNs)
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
  • Medical Assistants
  • Other Staff Physicians

Promote evidence-based medicine, patient safety, clinical excellence, and continuous quality improvement throughout the organization.

QualificationsRequired
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school (no specialty requirement)
  • Active, unrestricted physician license in the state of Texas
  • Current DEA registration in the state of Texas
  • Active Medicare and Medicaid enrollment/credentialing
  • Eligible to serve as Medical Director under applicable state regulations
  • Excellent clinical judgment and leadership skills
Preferred
  • Previous experience as Medical Director
  • Addiction experience preferred, but not required
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in a relevant specialty such as:
    • Addiction Medicine
    • Psychiatry
    • Family Medicine
    • Internal Medicine
    • Emergency Medicine

Knowledge & Skills

Successful candidates will possess:

  • Knowledge of Addiction Medicine and Behavioral Health
  • Understanding of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) best practices
  • Familiarity with SAMHSA, DEA, HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid, and federal confidentiality regulations
  • Strong physician leadership and team collaboration skills
  • Excellent communication and patient-centered care approach
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
Physical Requirements

This position primarily involves sedentary work with occasional standing and walking.

Requirements include:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
