Job description

Are you passionate about patient care and seeking a rewarding career with growth opportunities? Look no further! UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is currently hiring a full-time Medical Assistant / Patient Service Coordinator to support our medical oncology offices. Here are the details:

  • Position: Medical Assistant / Patient Service Coordinator
  • Location: UPMC Hillman Cancer Center (Home base in Johnstown)
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, daylight hours (8:00 am - 4:30 pm) No evenings, weekends, or holidays are required!

This position includes travel as part of a structured weekly rotation:

  • 1 day in Ebensburg
  • 1 day at Johnstown
  • 1 day at Somerset
  • 2 days flexed to one of the above locations as needed

This role supports physicians by assisting with patient care and completing clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks to ensure a positive patient experience. Daily responsibilities include taking vital signs, triaging patients, stocking supplies, and cleaning exam rooms. The ideal candidate also brings frontoffice experience, such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and helping manage patient flow. We're seeking someone who communicates compassionately with patients and families, can multitask in a fastpaced setting, works well both independently and as part of a team, and brings empathy, professionalism, and a strong commitment to exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Check schedules and organize patient flow. Accompany patients to the exam/procedure room. Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, etc. Collect patient information/history; take vitals, perform screenings per provider guidelines. Relay instructions to patients/families.
  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance. Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.
  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol. Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control. Clean according to the scheduled maintenance program and keep appropriate records. Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Comply with the requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data. Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs. Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure. Assist physicians with procedures. Document patient information in the medical record.
  • Answering calls and providing pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. Complete forms/requisitions as needed. Schedule appointments. Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics. Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately. Other front office responsibilities, as required.
  • Under the direction and supervision of a physician, administer injectable medication and vaccines when appropriate.

Salaries range from$18.59 - $27.96 hourly

Medical Assistant, Senior:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT)
  • OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA)
  • OR at least 1 year of patient care experience.
  • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category-specific tasks as determined by the manager.
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.

Salaries range from $18.79 - $28.03 hourly

Medical Assistant, Expert:

  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT)
  • OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) and 1 year of patient care experience
  • OR at least 2years of patient care experience.
  • Must successfully complete the UPMC Preceptor training and serve as a preceptor and mentor to newly hired team members.
  • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in all practice category-specific tasks as determined by the manager.

Salaries range from $18.99 - $28.11 hourly

Patient Service Coordinator:

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of three years of direct patient care and or phlebotomy experience.
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with individuals from multi-disciplinary groups.
  • Possesses excellent organizational skills.

Salaries range from $18.99 - $28.11 hourly
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
