Job description

Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN), Inpatient
Department: Inpatient Nursing Unit
Reports to: Nurse Manager, Inpatient
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN), Inpatient directs and provides high-quality, compassionate and evidence-based care to surgical patients in a specialty hospital setting. The RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of pre- and post-operative patients to ensure optimal recovery and patient safety. This role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking and collaboration within the multidisciplinary healthcare team. The RN ensures delegated care is consistent with patient/family needs and the patient plan of care.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Assessment
  • Completes a thorough assessment of patients as well as surgical specific assessment based on need and utilizes critical thinking skills to direct appropriate care and treatments.
  • Completes and documents assessments in a thorough and accurate manner within the patients electronic Medical Record (eMR).
  • Assesses the need for patient and family instruction and provides necessary education.

Planning
  • Initiates, develops, and documents the patient plan of care based on patient assessment and surgical diagnosis/procedure. Individualizes the patient plan of care based on changing clinical findings.
  • Interacts with other disciplines as needed to determine plan of care and to create a discharge plan.
  • Reviews and updates plan of care minimally every 24 hours

Implementation
  • Provides safe and comprehensive nursing care according to state regulations, hospital policy and procedure and The Joint Commission standards.
  • Establish care priorities based on patient problems and communicate with staff of patient problems/concerns/changes in condition. Notify physician promptly regarding concerns.
  • Must be proficient in medication administration, including IV therapy, as evidenced by lack of medication errors as well as reports medication errors.
  • Perform procedures accurately, completely and safely according to established policy and procedure and physician orders.
  • Provide care with minimal supervision in a timely manner.
  • Direct and oversee Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) direct patient care.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients using safety precautions appropriately.
  • Use correct body mechanics in assisting with patient mobility.
  • Follows Universal Precautions, asepsis, and infection control procedures.
  • Complies with HIPAA Privacy laws.

Evaluation
  • Reassess patients at appropriate intervals to ensure desired outcome is achieved.
  • Evaluate and adjust the patient plan of care for realistic outcomes.
  • Supports the efforts of the facility to improve engagement and safety through hourly patient rounding.
  • Communicates findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to provider in a timely and effective manner.
  • Documents findings in the Electronic Medical Record (eMR).

  • Responsible for personal attendance and punctuality to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations of the department by facility policy.
  • Use budgeted supplies and equipment judiciously.
  • Ensures a safe, supportive environment for patients and staff.
  • Completes annual competencies, in-services and educational opportunities as required by organization.
  • Attends seventy-five percent of staff meeting opportunities.

Qualifications, Education, Experience and Ability
  • Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the United States.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Kansas
  • One year RN experience in a hospital medical-surgical, acute care facility or ambulatory care setting preferred. Previous surgical, orthopedic, neurological, or critical care RN experience desired.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required within 60 days of hire. PALS as assigned.
  • Ability to relate and work effectively with others.
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care as well as basic computer skills to meet documentation standards.
  • Participate in goal-setting and educational activities for own professional advancement.

Environmental and Physical Requirements
  • Works in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds using proper lifting technique several times during their shift.
  • Requires physical ability for long-term standing, occasional sitting, crouching, kneeling, frequent walking, reaching with reaching above head and below waist.
  • Risks include exposure to blood and body fluids (high), contact with chemicals, and exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently, have cognitive skills for math, reading, filing and sterile technique skills.
  • Communication skills to interact with employees, patients, families, and physicians.
  • Vision for near, far & mid-range accommodation.
  • Hearing for low, medium, and high pitch.
