Summary
The Opinions Editor is responsible for the opinions/columns content of The Xavierite. The Opinions Editor is responsible for developing column topics along with Xavierite columnists for the section, and maintaining contacts with contributors for the Opinions section.
This student employment opportunity supports the development of skills aligned with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies. Through this role, students will strengthen the following competencies:

  • Teamwork: Students build teamwork skills by collaborating with supervisors, staff, and peers to support department goals, assist others, and contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Technology: Students build technology skills by using department systems, software, digital tools, equipment, or university platforms to complete tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Communication: Students build communication skills by practicing clear, respectful, and professional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication in a workplace setting.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the Opinions Section layout of The Xavierite newspaper
  • Ensures that Opinions Section is two pages of content per issue
  • Oversees The Xavierite Editorial Board and the overall production of the weekly staff editorial.
  • Writes one column story per week
  • Attends weekly section meeting with the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor-in-Chief
  • Attends general staff meeting
  • Meets weekly with his/her section writers
  • Maintain weekly-posted office hours in The Xavierite office (6 hours per week).
  • Though majority of stories are opinion pieces, the Opinions Editor ensures that factual information is in the article and that the section as a whole serves as an open forum for the community of Saint Xavier University
  • Makes sure that all "Letters to the Editor" include: Name (first and last), email address, year of the student, and permission to publish it from writer.
  • Is a leading member of the Student Media Street Team.

Qualifications
MUST BE A STUDENT AT SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY
Must be Federal Work Study Eligible
Must Include a Resume and Cover Letter
Experience in journalism, communication, and English preferred.
