What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly email developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly Email Developer, you need strong HTML/CSS coding skills, a keen eye for design, and experience with responsive email development, often supported by a relevant portfolio. Familiarity with email marketing platforms like Mailchimp or Salesforce Marketing Cloud, as well as knowledge of email testing tools such as Litmus or Email on Acid, is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for meeting deadlines and collaborating with clients or teams. These skills ensure the delivery of high-performing, visually appealing emails that render correctly across devices and drive successful marketing campaigns.

How does an hourly email developer typically collaborate with marketing teams and other stakeholders?

As an Hourly Email Developer, you'll frequently work closely with marketing teams, designers, and project managers to turn campaign concepts into responsive, visually appealing email templates. Effective communication is essential, as you'll need to interpret creative briefs, clarify requirements, and provide technical expertise on email best practices and limitations. You may also be responsible for testing emails across various email clients and troubleshooting rendering issues, ensuring campaigns are delivered on time and meet brand standards. This collaborative environment allows you to contribute technical solutions while gaining insights into broader marketing strategies.

What is an hourly email developer?

Hourly Email Developers are professionals who specialize in designing, coding, and testing email templates and campaigns, and who are compensated based on the number of hours they work rather than a fixed salary or per-project rate. They often work with marketing teams or agencies to ensure emails are visually appealing, responsive on different devices, and compatible with various email clients. Their responsibilities may include troubleshooting rendering issues, integrating dynamic content, and following best practices for deliverability and accessibility. Hiring hourly allows businesses flexibility to scale resources as needed for short-term projects or ongoing campaigns.

Software Engineer I/II - Marketing Frontend Developer(Magento 2)

Full-time

Job description

The Marketing Frontend Developer sits within the Marketing Technology (MarTech) organization and is dedicated to building and optimizing customer-facing digital experiences. This role partners closely with MarTech leadership, Advertising, Design, and Brand Owners to rapidly deliver high-converting landing pages, onsite UX enhancements, and A/B tests without dependency on traditional Application Development sprint cycles.

The Marketing Frontend Developer will leverage Magento 2 frontend development, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS, Magento Page Builder, and experimentation tools to execute campaign experiences, improve funnel performance, and maintain marketing UI/UX standards across the site. The Marketing Frontend Developer will balance custom-coded templates with Page Builder-friendly components to ensure marketing experiences remain easy to adjust by non-developers over time. Exposure to Angular or other modern frameworks is a plus but not required.

While the primary focus of this role is Magento 2, the developer may also provide limited support for a Shopify storefront during a transitional period; Shopify experience is a plus but not required.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing Web Experience Development

  • Design and develop responsive landing pages for products and marketing campaigns, from wireframe through production.
  • Translate marketing briefs and UX requirements into clean, production-ready frontend builds.
  • Create and maintain reusable landing page components and templates to increase campaign velocity.
  • Own QA for marketing releases (cross-browser/device checks, accessibility, and performance hygiene).
  • Build and maintain Magento Page Builder-compatible sections and templates to enable future updates by non-technical marketing partners.
  • Balance custom frontend development with platform-native tools to support long-term maintainability and campaign agility.
  • Support frontend updates across both Magento 2 and (as needed) Shopify marketing experiences during platform transition efforts.

Experimentation / CRO Engineering

  • Partner with MarTech leadership to identify behavioral insights and testing opportunities.
  • Implement and QA A/B and multivariate tests using split-testing tools and frontend code changes.
  • Roll winning experiments into permanent site code and retire losing variants cleanly.

Custom Onsite Experiences

  • Build custom onsite modules such as promotional banners, pop-ups/overlays, sticky CTAs, countdown timers, quizzes/recommenders, and personalization blocks.
  • Integrate approved third-party onsite widgets when needed.

Email & Lifecycle Experience Support

  • Develop and modify responsive HTML email templates and custom content blocks to support lifecycle and campaign messaging.
  • Partner with Lifecycle Marketing to ensure consistent creative experience from email → landing page.

Analytics & Optimization Support

  • Support tagging and data-layer events for new marketing modules and tests.
  • Assist with troubleshooting measurement gaps tied to marketing experience releases.
  • Apply performance best practices aligned with Core Web Vitals.

General Delivery Expectations

  • Produce clean, well-documented frontend code, Page Builder-ready modules, and lightweight documentation to support long-term reuse and marketing self-service.
  • Provide accurate and consistent effort estimates and deliver reliably against deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by MarTech leadership.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science preferred or equivalent work experience required.
  • 2–5 years building customer-facing marketing or eCommerce web experiences (landing pages, funnels, promotional modules).
  • Hands-on experience implementing A/B tests through tools such as Optimizely, VWO, Adobe Target, Convert, or similar.
  • Experience translating wireframes into polished responsive builds.
  • Responsive HTML email development experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3 (modern responsive layouts).
  • Solid UI/UX sensibility with attention to visual consistency and conversion best practices.
  • Experience working with design teams and translating creative assets into production-ready builds; ability to slice/export assets from Adobe Creative Cloud tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, XD) preferred.
  • Shopify storefront or landing page development experience is a plus, though Magento 2 remains the primary platform focus.
  • Comfortable operating in a high-volume campaign environment with rapid turnaround.
  • Familiarity with performance optimization and Core Web Vitals preferred.
  • Familiarity with Angular or other modern JavaScript frameworks is a plus but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of modern frontend development for eCommerce and marketing experiences.
  • Ability to work quickly and effectively in a high-volume campaign environment with shifting priorities.
  • Excellent collaboration skills across Marketing, Design, Analytics, and Engineering teams.
  • Strong attention to detail in UI consistency, responsiveness, and conversion best practices.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of deliverables from build through QA and release coordination.
  • Ability to translate high-level marketing goals into functional frontend experiences.
  • Eager to learn and grow within a fast-moving MarTech and experimentation environment while delivering high-quality work.
  • Self-starter mindset with proactive communication and accountability.
