What types of projects might I work on as an hourly Computer Science Bioinformatics professional?

As an hourly Computer Science Bioinformatics professional, you can expect to be involved in projects such as analyzing large-scale biological datasets, developing bioinformatics tools or pipelines, and supporting research teams with data processing tasks. Your work may include tasks like writing scripts to automate data analysis, maintaining databases of genetic information, or collaborating with biologists to interpret results. The variety and scope of projects will often depend on the organization's focus—whether it's genomics, proteomics, or clinical research—and you may find yourself working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Hourly Computer Science Bioinformatics professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly Computer Science Bioinformatics professional, you need a strong background in computer science, programming (such as Python or R), and a solid understanding of biological data analysis, often supported by a degree in bioinformatics, computer science, or related fields. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools (e.g., BLAST, Bioconductor), databases, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret complex data and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for generating accurate insights from biological datasets and driving successful research outcomes.

What is an Hourly Computer Science Bioinformatics job?

An Hourly Computer Science Bioinformatics job involves applying computer science techniques to solve biological data problems, such as analyzing DNA sequences or managing large biological datasets. These roles are typically temporary or contract-based, where individuals are paid by the hour rather than salaried. Bioinformaticians in these positions may work on tasks like developing algorithms, writing code for data analysis, or supporting research projects. The flexibility of hourly work allows companies to hire experts for specific projects or periods of need.

Job description

Hourly Pay Range:
$42.54 - $65.94 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.
Position Highlights:
  • Position: Research Scientist- Center for Psychiatric Genetics
  • Location: Evanston, IL
  • Full Time
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, [hours and flexible work schedules]

A Brief Overview:
The main research interest at CPG is to use a functional genomics approach for dissecting the molecular and cellular basis of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. The Center performs multi-omics studies of these disorders. The Research Scientist is expected to serve as a Co-Investigator to lead/direct the genomics and imaging data analyses for existing federally funded projects while developing one's own externally-funded projects as a Principal Investigator/Program Director. No initial independent funding is required, but a successful candidate is expected to support a portion of their effort through external grants or contracts through the role of Co-Investigator, and to submit grant applications and proposals to internal and external sponsors to obtain their own independent project funding within 3-5 years of starting in the position. While candidates with bioinformatics or genomics background and skills are preferred, an ideal candidate is expected to have the motivation and potential to develop independent externally-funded research on neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.
Additionally, Endeavor Health is affiliated with the University of Chicago School of Medicine, and you will have the opportunity to collaborate with research professionals from the institution.
What you will do:
  • Serve as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on research projects with responsibilities including but not limited to: monitoring research budgets, developing and managing research projects, designing experiments and procedures, and performing analysis for publication and presentation
  • As a Co-Investigator, lead the data analyses of different projects and provide bioinformatic and computational support to the research programs at CPG
  • Supervise Research Assistants, Post-docs, students and other laboratory personnel conducting experimental procedures and data collection.
  • Participate in national or international scientific/professional meetings as speaker/presenter
  • Submit grant applications to internal and external sponsors for research projects as a Principal Investigator/Program Director
  • Contribute manuscripts annually as a primary author or senior author for manuscripts submitted to peer reviewed journals

What you will need:
  • Education: Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or M.D., including those conferred outside of the U.S.)
  • Experience: Between 2-5 years of experience, after conferral of doctorate, either as postdoctoral fellow, in a professional research laboratory, Assistant Professor, or a combination thereof.
  • Preferred Skills: Bioinformatics or genomics background and skills are preferred. Strong motivation and potential to develop independent externally-funded research on neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders is a plus
