Hourly Cmm Programmer information

What is an hourly CMM programmer?

Hourly CMM Programmers are skilled technicians who specialize in creating, testing, and modifying programs for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) on an hourly employment or contract basis. Their main responsibility is to ensure precise measurement of manufactured parts using CMM equipment, typically working in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. They interpret engineering drawings, set up CMM machines, and may also analyze data and create inspection reports. As hourly workers, they may be employed for specific projects or periods, providing flexibility to employers who need specialized expertise for quality control.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an hourly CMM programmer?

To thrive as an Hourly CMM Programmer, you need a strong understanding of precision measurement, part inspection processes, and technical knowledge of metrology, often supported by experience in manufacturing or quality control. Familiarity with CMM machines, programming languages like PC-DMIS or Calypso, and experience using CAD software are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate measurement, maintain product quality, and support seamless collaboration with engineering and production teams.

What are common challenges faced by hourly CMM programmers and how can they be managed?

Hourly CMM Programmers often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex engineering drawings, dealing with tight production deadlines, and ensuring measurement accuracy in a fast-paced environment. To manage these, it's important to regularly update your knowledge of measurement standards, communicate closely with engineers and machinists, and carefully validate your programs before full-scale implementation. Collaborating with quality and production teams can also help resolve ambiguities and improve workflow efficiency, making the job smoother and more effective.

What is the difference between Hourly Cmm Programmer vs Cmm Technician?

AspectHourly Cmm ProgrammerCmm Technician
CredentialsTypically requires CNC programming certifications, technical trainingOften requires inspection or quality control certifications, technical training
Work EnvironmentManufacturing or quality labs, using CMM machines for programming and setupInspection areas, operating and maintaining CMM equipment, verifying parts
Employer & IndustryManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, industrial sectorsQuality assurance, manufacturing, aerospace, automotive sectors

The main difference is that Hourly Cmm Programmers focus on creating and editing CMM programs to automate measurements, while Cmm Technicians primarily operate, maintain, and verify parts using CMM equipment. Both roles require technical skills and industry experience, but their responsibilities differ in programming versus inspection tasks.

Job description

Overview:

Holley Performance Brands, founded in 1903, is a leading designer, manufacturer, and marketer of high-performance automotive aftermarket products. Our portfolio of iconic brands powers enthusiasts and racers worldwide—from classic muscle and modern performance to off-road and powersports—combining a rich heritage of innovation with a passion for performance.

Seeking a highly skilled CMM Programmer to create, maintain, and optimize CMM programs to ensure accurate measurement of precision components. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with CMM operation, programming, and quality control processes within a CNC machine manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Programming & Operation
  • Develop and optimize CMM programs using PC-DMIS programming software on Hexagon CMMs.
  • Program and operate CMMs to perform dimensional inspections.
  • Perform the CMM “prove-out” and validation on first-run or revised programs; refine the program and inspection method as necessary.
  • Translate engineering drawings, CAD models, and GD&T into accurate inspection routines.
Inspection & Quality Control
  • Conduct first article, in-process, and final inspections of parts.
  • Analyze measurement data and ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Identify and report non-conformances.
Process Improvement
  • Collaborate with Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, and Production teams to optimize inspection processes.
  • Improve the efficiency of programming and inspection methods and processes—both speed and accuracy—while minimizing necessary secondary verifications.
Documentation
  • Create and maintain detailed inspection reports.
  • Document and update work instructions and standard operating procedures as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Bring:

Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in CMM programming and inspection in a manufacturing environment, preferably for machined product.
  • Extensive experience with GD&T and interpreting engineering drawings.
Skills
  • Proficiency in CMM PC-DMIS programming software.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, metrology principles, and quality standards (ASME Y14.5).
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Technical Skills
  • Ability to program for multi-part fixtures.
  • Ability to program 1-touch programs (touch and walk away).
  • Hands-on experience with precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, comparators, etc.).

Bonus Points For:

  • Certification in GD&T or Metrology (e.g., ASME Y14.5 certification).
  • Certification in CMM programming software (e.g., PC-DMIS).

Key Competencies:

  • Strong attention to detail and precision.
  • Ability to work independently and lead projects.
  • Proactive in identifying and resolving technical challenges.
  • Team-oriented with a focus on collaboration and strong communication skills.

Work Environment:

  • Predominantly in the inspection/CMM room, though may review processes in a manufacturing floor environment.
  • Regular use of CMMs and precision instruments, as well as PC desktop/laptop and associated software.
  • Standing or sitting for extended periods during inspections and programming.
