Position Summary The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) is accepting applications for the position of Airport Firefighter. This recruitment process will fill anticipated Airport Firefighter openings and establish an eligibility list for future openings. The Airport Firefighter position is a full-time position located at the Minneapolis-St.
Paul International Airport. The Airport Firefighters are responsible for a variety of functions within the MSP International Airport and neighboring communities, including the following: respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents which include the provision of medical, fire suppression, and rescue services. Protecting life and property from the hazards of fire, providing assistance and responding to various types of medical and other emergencies.
Firefighters apply fire suppression methods to control and stop property damage, save lives through rescue from fire or other hazardous environments, provide efficient and immediate care to the ill and injured, perform safety inspections and participate in public education programs. This is a full-time Firefighter job opportunity with 24-hour shifts and average of 56 hours per week, including 3 hours that are subject to Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) that shall be paid at one and one-half (1 1/2) times the base hourly rate. COMPENSATION OVERVIEW: The Fire Fighter classification includes four pay steps.
2026 Hourly Rate: $33.912 - $38.869. 2026 Annual Salary (including FLSA and Holiday Value Pay): $107,833 - $123,595 A 3% wage increase will take effect on January 1, 2027, as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement. Please note: New hires are placed at step 1 of the Fire Fighter pay scale

Position Description ACCOUNTABILITIES AND FUNCTIONS Essential Tasks Respond to calls for aircraft emergencies, structural fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents or fires, grass or wild land fires and other calls as directed. Conduct applicable tactics to rescue victims as directed from aircraft fires, motor vehicle accidents, structure fires and other emergency situations. Select and supply appropriate extinguishing agents to the source of fire.
Drive and operate all fire department apparatus and equipment. Work with ambulance service provider in medical response situations to ensure that the highest level of emergency medical care is provided. Prepare written reports detailing patient care or specific fire fighting and rescue actions taken on-scene.
Conduct daily and weekly vehicle and equipment inspections as assigned. Ensure all vehicle discrepancies are documented on the vehicle check out sheet and reported to one of the on-duty captains. Conduct all radio communications with the tower and the Communications Center in a professional, respectful manner.
Conduct fire safety, fire extinguisher and pre-fire planning inspections. Conduct public education programs. Keep all fire department equipment and property in good operating condition and report discrepancies to one of the on-duty captains.
Perform housekeeping duties during each shift, keeping the station clean and in good order. Participate in all fire department training activities. Maintain current knowledge of airport layout including runways, taxiways and ramp areas.
Maintain current knowledge of all airport response areas including the military areas and fuel storage facilities. Maintain current knowledge of department procedures for elevator and escalator rescue operations. Secondary Tasks May serve on Fire Department or MAC committees or teams.
May serve as Acting Driver or Acting Captain as assigned. May serve as instructor to train other personnel on a variety of topics. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum of two years fire fighter work experience (Full-time, part-time, paid on-call, volunteer, or military). Valid government issued driver's license that is unrestricted except for corrective lenses.
Current MN Board of Fire Fighter Training and Education (MBFTE) Fire Fighter License. If no MBFTE license, must obtain within 90 days of appointment. Completion of a HAZMAT Operations level course, NFPA 472 Hazmat Operations Level Certification, or equivalent as determined by the Airport Fire Department.
Current Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board (MFSCB) Fire Fighter II, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) Fire Fighter II certification, or ProBoard Fire Fighter II Certification. Current National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification. In lieu of the NREMT, must have a current MN Office of Emergency Medical Services EMT Certification and successfully obtain a National Registry EMT within one year of appointment.
Clear and articulate written and oral communication skills. Operating telephone service. DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS Associate Degree in Fire Protection or Fire Science.
Completion of Fire Protection or Fire Science Technical Certificate (40-60 Credits). Completion of two or more year's post-secondary education. IFSAC Airport Fire Fighter Certification, or ProBoard Airport Fire Fighter Certification Two or more years of ARFF work experience at a military base or Part 139 airport.
WORKING CONDITIONS Environmental Parameters: Able to work in the station, on the airfield in all weather conditions (hot, cold, humid, dry, and wet), in high places. Able to work in small spaces. Able to work in an airport environment with conditions which may include: fumes, odors, gases, dry chemicals, foam and other hazardous chemicals and dusts as well as decibels in the range of 65-100.
Able to work in the extreme heat or cold (temperature sufficiently high or low to cause marked bodily discomfort) with temperature changes (variations in temperature which accompany extreme heat and cold and are sufficiently marked and abrupt to cause marked bodily reactions). Able to adapt to noise and/or vibration (sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction and/or vibration). Able to tolerate working conditions which may affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation (these conditions are present to a degree or a length of time sufficient to cause marked discomfort to the worker).
Conditions or situations in which there is danger to life, health, or bodily injury such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to burns and radiant energy, exposure to all types of explosives and exposure to toxic chemical and biological agents. Physical Demands: Able to stand and walk to a significant degree. Able to work in conditions in which there is significant mental stress, response to all types of life and death emergencies and distressing conditions surrounding accidents/sites.
Work involves talking and/or hearing. Able to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Able to identify and distinguish colors.
Must be able to swim, climb ladders, ascend and descend stairs. Work Schedule: Able to work any shift assigned, including holidays and weekends. Available to work overtime as assigned and as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. APTITUDE REQUIREMENTS Cognitive Communication: Able to be conversant in fire department rules, regulations and procedures, able to read literature, scientific and technical journals.
