Lowboy Driver – Heavy Equipment Hauling

Department: Contracting
Location: North Carolina Project Sites

Position Summary

The Lowboy Driver is responsible for transporting heavy construction equipment safely and efficiently between job sites using a lowboy trailer and other commercial vehicles as assigned.

This role supports grading and paving crews by ensuring equipment is delivered safely and on time. Drivers may also assist field crews with general construction tasks when needed.

Typical work hours are 8–14 hour shifts, Monday through Friday, with occasional night work, overtime, and weekends depending on project schedules. Minimal overnight travel may be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a Class A commercial motor vehicle, including lowboy trailers and other assigned trucks

  • Transport heavy construction equipment between job sites

  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete required documentation

  • Secure equipment properly for safe transportation

  • Maintain cleanliness and basic upkeep of assigned vehicle

  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and DOT requirements

  • Assist construction crews with tasks such as:

    • Shoveling and material handling

    • Installing erosion control

    • Carrying materials and placing posts

    • Operating small tools and compact equipment

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area

  • Participate in proactive team efforts to support project goals

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the foreman or supervisor

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

  • Ability to read and understand basic safety documents and reports

  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

  • Strong attention to safety and equipment operation

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a crew

  • Strong work ethic and reliability

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required

  • Minimum of two (2) years of commercial driving experience

  • Experience hauling heavy construction equipment preferred

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Valid Class A CDL required

  • Tanker and HazMat endorsements preferred but not required

  • Other combinations of endorsements may be considered

Work Environment

This role involves working in outdoor construction environments and operating heavy equipment around active job sites. Conditions may include exposure to weather, dust, noise, and heavy machinery.
