What is a host dishwasher?

Host Dishwashers are restaurant staff members responsible for cleaning dishes, utensils, glassware, and kitchen equipment, while sometimes also assisting with basic food prep or hosting duties. They play an essential role in maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen and dining areas. Depending on the restaurant, a Host Dishwasher may also greet guests, bus tables, or help with other front-of-house tasks as needed. This position requires attention to detail, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and good teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a host dishwasher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Host Dishwasher, you need strong attention to detail, the ability to work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment, and basic knowledge of sanitation practices, typically with on-the-job training rather than formal qualifications. Familiarity with commercial dishwashing equipment, cleaning agents, and safe food handling procedures is essential. Reliability, a positive attitude, and teamwork are standout soft skills for supporting kitchen operations and maintaining a clean workspace. These skills ensure efficient service, uphold health standards, and contribute to a smooth-running hospitality environment.

What are some common challenges faced by host dishwashers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Host Dishwashers often encounter fast-paced and high-pressure environments, especially during peak dining hours. Managing time efficiently and staying organized are crucial, as you'll need to balance cleaning duties with helping maintain an inviting atmosphere for guests. Communication with kitchen and front-of-house staff is essential to ensure smooth operations and timely turnover of clean dishes. Building physical endurance and learning to prioritize tasks will help you thrive in this role and pave the way for advancement within the restaurant industry.

Is a host dishwasher job worth it?

A host dishwasher job provides entry-level work experience, often involving cleaning dishes, assisting with customer service, and working in a fast-paced environment. It typically offers low pay and limited advancement but can help develop work habits and skills useful for future roles in hospitality or food service.

What's the minimum wage for a host dishwasher?

The minimum wage for a host dishwasher typically aligns with the federal or state minimum wage, which varies by location but generally starts around $7.25 to $15 per hour. Job description

At The Madison Concourse Hotel, our Dishwashers are part of the team behind every meal we serve, every banquet we host and every busy night in our kitchen. You'll work alongside our culinary and service teams to keep dishes, equipment and workspaces clean and ready for whatever comes next.

This is a full-time position starting at $18/hour. You'll primarily work evening shifts, with availability to work weekends and holidays as needed.

It's busy. It's hands-on. And sometimes it's messy. But you'll have a team around you, and you'll know that the work you're doing helps everyone else do their jobs well.

What you'll be doing

Your day-to-day work will include:

  • Operating the commercial dishwasher and washing dishes, utensils, pots, pans and other kitchen equipment
  • Cleaning and sanitizing equipment, floors and work areas
  • Organizing and stocking clean dishes and kitchen supplies
  • Taking out garbage, breaking down boxes and removing debris
  • Keeping the dish area and surrounding spaces clean and organized
  • Following food safety, sanitation and safety procedures
  • Communicating with your teammates and helping out where needed

This is hands-on, physical work. You'll spend much of your shift on your feet and will occasionally lift heavier items. The kitchen can get busy, and yes, sometimes the work is messy. That's part of working in a kitchen. We're looking for someone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty and takes pride in leaving things better than they found them.

Most importantly, you'll be part of a team. You'll work alongside our cooks, servers, banquet team and other kitchen team members, and your work will help them do their jobs well.

What we're looking for

You don't need years of restaurant experience to be successful here. We can teach you our processes. What we're really looking for is someone who is dependable, willing to learn and takes pride in their work.

You might be a great fit if you:

  • Like staying busy and enjoy having a job where you can see what you've accomplished at the end of your shift
  • Notice when something needs to be cleaned, organized or restocked
  • Can keep moving and stay focused when things get busy
  • Don't mind physical work
  • Work well with others and are comfortable taking direction
  • Take pride in doing your job well
  • Have some knowledge of food safety and sanitation, or are willing to learn
  • Are available to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
What you get when you join our team

We want you to know what you're getting before you apply. Along with your hourly wage, our team members enjoy:

  • A free employee meal every shift
  • Free underground employee parking
  • Convenient location right on the bus line
  • Paid time off
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Discounted hotel rooms
  • Discounts at Circ and Starbucks
  • $1,000 employee referral bonus
  • Cash Advance, with access to earned wages as early as your first shift
  • Up to 30% off hotel rooms at Great Wolf Resorts throughout the U.S. and Canada
  • Pet insurance
  • And more!

Because this is a full-time position, you'll also have access to our full benefits package, including:

  • Quartz health insurance
  • Delta Dental
  • Vision insurance
  • Company-paid basic life insurance and short-term disability
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Additional life insurance options
A little about us

We're located in the heart of downtown Madison, just steps from the Wisconsin State Capitol and State Street. Our hotel is busy, our days are varied and there is always something happening.

But no matter how busy we are, we believe in taking care of the people who take care of our guests. Every role matters here. The work our guests see is only possible because of the people working behind the scenes to make it happen.

If you're looking for a full-time position where you'll stay busy, work alongside a team and know that what you do matters, we'd love to meet you.

Qualified applicants must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment drug test and background check. The Madison Concourse Hotel is a drug-free workplace.

Our goal is to improve the quality of work life by using fair and consistent treatment and providing equal growth opportunities for all team members. We are an equal opportunity employer as defined by federal, state or local laws.
