Job description

Position Overview

Hidaya Academy of Champaign-Urbana is seeking a responsible and dependable Afterschool Program Teacher/Staff member to supervise and engage elementary-aged students from school dismissal through parent pick-up. The ideal candidate creates a fun, safe, and structured environment where students complete homework, review Qur'an, pray, and take part in enrichment activities and stations until they are picked up.


Daily Schedule

Staff arrive at 3:00 PM to set up before dismissal and stay until 5:45 PM to wrap up and lock up after the last student is picked up. If all students are picked up early, staff may wrap up, lock up, and leave early. A typical afternoon runs as follows:

  • 3:15 - 3:30 PM Snack
  • 3:30 - 3:45 PM Restroom break
  • 3:45-4:00 PM- 20 min Quiet reading time or homework time, older students will finish any homework, if there is no homework children will read books by themselves or to each other.
  • 4:00-4:15PM: Quran Revision- ask for 1-2 Quran volunteers to revise Quran with students or Prayer time: Asr and/or Magrib, can pray with the community
  • 4:15-5:30 PM: Stations including board games, art/ croaft, outdoor playtime, lego robotics.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise elementary students in a safe, welcoming environment from set-up through wrap-up each day.
  • Follow the daily schedule, including snack, restroom breaks, quiet reading/homework time, Qur'an revision, prayer, and activity stations.
  • Support Qur'an revision with students individually or in small groups, coordinating with volunteers as needed.
  • Facilitate and accompany students in Asr and/or Maghrib prayer.
  • Assist students with homework and support quiet reading time for younger students.
  • Plan and lead daily stations, including at least one craft each day, board games, Kahoot, active games, outdoor play (or musallah-area play in cold weather), and other enrichment activities.
  • Distribute snack and maintain accurate snack/supply inventory.
  • Carry a walkie talkie and cell phone at all times while on duty for staff and emergency communication.
  • Sign in each student at dismissal and ensure parents sign out their child at pick-up.
  • Supervise pick-up at the school entrance and coordinate with parents via the private Hidaya afterschool WhatsApp group.
  • Send a daily or weekly recap of activities and any issues to administration; report emergencies to Ms. Alaa immediately.
  • On low-attendance days, assist with planning and preparing activities/crafts for future sessions (see Low Attendance Policy below).

Qualifications

  • Must be reliable, responsible, and consistently punctual.
  • Previous experience working with elementary-age children preferred, but not required.
  • Comfortable assisting with basic Qur'an revision and leading/accompanying students in prayer.
  • Patient, nurturing, and able to manage a group of young students across multiple activity stations.
  • Good communication skills with children, parents, and administration (including via WhatsApp).
  • Ability to pass a background check, as required.

Communication & Reporting

  • Parents communicate with afterschool staff through a private Hidaya WhatsApp group, including coordinating pick-up.
  • Staff provide administration with a daily or weekly recap of scheduled activities and any student issues.
  • Any student issues are managed directly by staff; all emergencies are reported to Ms. Alaa immediately.

Compensation

$16-$20 per hour, commensurate with experience. This is an hourly position.
