Description
The Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce an adjunct Lead Teacher position for the Training Choir in the Peabody Children's Chorus (PCC) Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD commencing September 2026.
The Training Choir serves as an important entry point into the Peabody Children's Chorus program, providing foundational choral, vocal, and musicianship instruction for developing young singers. Through engaging, skill-based instruction and a nurturing learning environment, the Training Choir prepares students for advancement into the ensemble division of the PCC while fostering a lifelong love of music.
Since its establishment in 1990, the Peabody Children's Chorus has grown from 30 to over 350 singers in multiple performance ensembles. The PCC is recognized for its commitment to artistic excellence, comprehensive musicianship training, and meaningful performance experiences.
The Peabody Children's Chorus values the highest artistic standards in all dimensions of its program, including repertoire selection, vocal development, music literacy, and performance practice. The successful candidate will nurture each singer's artistic and personal growth while fostering curiosity, discipline, confidence, and joy through music.

Established in 1894, the Peabody Preparatory boasts a rich history of nurturing artistic talent. With approximately 3,000 students passing through its doors every week, the school is Maryland's premier community school for music and dance.
The Peabody Preparatory welcomes students of all ages and levels of ability, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can discover and develop their musical potential. Offerings range from early childhood classes that spark a lifelong love of music and dance, to programs designed for adults and professional dancers and musicians seeking to hone their skills.
Located in downtown Baltimore and sharing space with the renowned Peabody Conservatory, the Preparatory also extends its reach through three satellite campuses in the communities of Towson, Annapolis, and Howard County, MD.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Lead Teacher will collaborate with Peabody Children's Chorus faculty and staff to support the ongoing operations of the program, including:
  • Lead weekly Training Choir rehearsals and instructional activities.
  • Develop and implement an engaging, age-appropriate curriculum in vocal technique, musicianship, and choral performance.
  • Prepare and submit weekly lesson plans, rehearsal slides, and instructional materials.
  • Select, teach, and rehearse repertoire that supports the artistic and educational goals of the Training Choir.
  • Prepare and organize music scores, recordings, and other student practice resources.
  • Help maintain the PCC source library and digital score archive.
  • Assess student progress through ongoing evaluation, vocal checks, and performance readiness assessment; provide recommendations for advancement within the Peabody Children's Chorus program.
  • Prepare students for performances, auditions, assessments, and other program milestones.
  • Assist with concert planning, preparation, and logistics, including seating charts, participation tracking, and performance materials.
  • Maintain accurate rehearsal and performance records, including attendance tracking, and communicate concerns with administrative staff, as needed.
  • Review concert material, programs, and roster information for accuracy.
  • Participate in student auditions and placement evaluations.
  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director to establish, implement, and evaluate the artistic and educational goals of the Training Choir.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Communicate regularly with students and families regarding attendance, performances, and program expectations.
  • Support the continued growth and success of the Training Choir and the broader Peabody Children's Chorus program.

Qualifications
Education requirements
Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, Choral Conducting, Vocal Performance, or a related field from an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching elementary-aged singers and/or conducting children's choirs.
  • Strong understanding of child vocal development and age-appropriate vocal pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of music literacy instruction, including solfège and sight-singing methodologies.
  • Experience designing curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and administrative skills.
  • Experience with Google Workspace and digital instructional tools.
  • Piano proficiency preferred.
