While both roles are remote and involve math skills, a Home Based Math Editor primarily reviews and edits math content for accuracy and clarity, often for publishers or educational platforms. Both require strong math knowledge and communication skills but differ in their core responsibilities and output.

What are some common challenges faced by home-based math editors, and how can they be managed?

Home-based math editors often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistency in mathematical notation, interpreting author intent without face-to-face communication, and maintaining focus in a home environment. To overcome these, it's helpful to establish clear communication channels with authors and project managers, use standardized style guides, and set up a dedicated, distraction-free workspace. Regular virtual check-ins with team members can also foster collaboration and clarify expectations.

What is a Home Based Math Editor?

A Home Based Math Editor is a professional who works remotely to review, edit, and sometimes create mathematical content for textbooks, educational materials, online courses, or academic publications. Their main responsibility is to ensure that all mathematical expressions, equations, and explanations are accurate, clear, and error-free. They may also format content to meet specific publishing standards and collaborate with authors, educators, or publishers. This role typically requires a strong background in mathematics, attention to detail, and proficiency with math editing software or typesetting tools like LaTeX. Working from home provides flexibility, but also requires self-motivation and effective communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Home Based Math Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Home Based Math Editor, you need a solid background in mathematics, attention to detail, and often a degree in math, education, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software, LaTeX, and online collaboration tools is typically required, along with knowledge of publishing standards. Strong communication, time management, and the ability to provide constructive feedback set standout editors apart. These skills ensure the accuracy, clarity, and quality of math content, which is essential for effective learning and publication.

Job description

Senior Editor, Inquirer Weekend
The Philadelphia Inquirer is looking for a proactive and autonomous senior editor to lead our digital weekend news operation and develop a distinct digital weekend edition of The Inquirer that further engages our subscribers and broadens the audience for our journalism. The Senior Editor, Inquirer Weekend will oversee a dedicated team of weekend reporters and editors and coordinate with teams from across the newsroom to ensure we consistently deliver an engaging, useful and responsive news report on weekends while also positioning us to be ahead of the news cycle entering each new week.
This position will work particularly closely with senior editors on our breaking news and audience teams and be responsible for managing the curation of our digital platforms throughout the weekend, assigning and editing breaking news stories, and selecting or commissioning stories for some of our most important daily lineups. This person will run the weekend news meetings.
We are looking for an accomplished journalist with substantial experience editing a wide range of stories who also holds a strong understanding of audience trends and best practices for digital content optimization.
This position will be based in the Greater Philadelphia area and is not open to fully remote employees, but will have the flexibility to work many shifts from home. You will work a four-day work week, Thursday-Sunday.
What You'll Do:
  • Develop a content strategy for our weekend edition, and work with editors across the newsroom to develop and deliver the content to support the strategy.
Identify available enterprise stories best suited for weekend publication and set the weekend news agenda.
  • Helm developing stories over the weekend and ensure that we deliver timely journalism for the most important stories and events.
  • Oversee and adjust as necessary the curation of our digital platforms and social media accounts, coordinating as necessary with programming editors to supplement digital and social content plans that have already been scheduled.
  • Create an editing and assigning structure for all stories, notifications and newsletters that originate over the weekend.
  • Collaborate with our product team to optimize the weekend user experience.
  • Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment

Who We're Looking For
  • 10-plus years working in digital media, with experience line editing and shaping stories.
  • Confidence to call the shots and run the news with a small team, or solo when necessary, while also demonstrating strong judgement on when to bring in other senior editors and newsroom personnel for support.
  • Comfort editing and evaluating stories on multiple subjects and beats. This editor will need to be able to identify and understand the value of stories beyond just breaking news or major events.
  • A demonstrated track record of shaping content and coverage plans that drove digital audience growth and/or prior experience working in audience development roles.
  • A curiosity for how people consume information as technology and trends continue to evolve. Someone eager to contribute to building systems and initiatives that encourage people to form a habit of engaging with our journalism.

This is an exempt-level editor position.
