What is the difference between Home Based Math Editor vs Freelance Math Content Writer?

AspectHome Based Math EditorFreelance Math Content Writer
CredentialsMath or education-related degrees, editing experienceStrong math knowledge, writing skills, possibly degrees in math or education
Work EnvironmentRemote, independent, flexible hoursRemote, flexible, project-based
Industry UsageEducational publishers, online learning platformsEducational websites, publishing, online courses
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on editing math content accuratelyFocus on creating engaging math content

While both roles are remote and involve math skills, a Home Based Math Editor primarily reviews and edits math content for accuracy and clarity, often for publishers or educational platforms. In contrast, a Freelance Math Content Writer creates original math content, such as articles or lessons, for various clients. Both require strong math knowledge and communication skills but differ in their core responsibilities and output.

What are some common challenges faced by home-based math editors, and how can they be managed?

Home-based math editors often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistency in mathematical notation, interpreting author intent without face-to-face communication, and maintaining focus in a home environment. To overcome these, it's helpful to establish clear communication channels with authors and project managers, use standardized style guides, and set up a dedicated, distraction-free workspace. Regular virtual check-ins with team members can also foster collaboration and clarify expectations.

What is a Home Based Math Editor?

A Home Based Math Editor is a professional who works remotely to review, edit, and sometimes create mathematical content for textbooks, educational materials, online courses, or academic publications. Their main responsibility is to ensure that all mathematical expressions, equations, and explanations are accurate, clear, and error-free. They may also format content to meet specific publishing standards and collaborate with authors, educators, or publishers. This role typically requires a strong background in mathematics, attention to detail, and proficiency with math editing software or typesetting tools like LaTeX. Working from home provides flexibility, but also requires self-motivation and effective communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Home Based Math Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Home Based Math Editor, you need a solid background in mathematics, attention to detail, and often a degree in math, education, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software, LaTeX, and online collaboration tools is typically required, along with knowledge of publishing standards. Strong communication, time management, and the ability to provide constructive feedback set standout editors apart. These skills ensure the accuracy, clarity, and quality of math content, which is essential for effective learning and publication.

Job description

Job Summary
Full-time: 37.5 Hours per week, Monday to Friday
Location: Ottawa Office (Up to 3 days per week), 70 Laurier Ave West, Suite 310, Ottawa, ON K1P 5V5 and Ottawa-based Home Office, or,ย remote if located outside of the National Capital Region.
Reporting To: Director of Technology
Salary Range: $80,000-90,000
Type of Vacancy: New
We are looking for a UI/Frontend Developer to join the Larus team. You will design and build the interfaces through which military planners, analysts, and decision-makers make sense of complex, high-stakes information, interactive maps with NATO symbology, AI-powered workflows, rich text and code editors, and collaborative scenario planning tools. This is not a dashboard role: you will build decision-support tools where clarity and responsiveness directly impact outcomes.ย
You will own features end-to-end, from gathering requirements with domain experts, through architecture and implementation, to shipping tested code. We expect you to have opinions about how frontend applications should be structured, and the experience to back them up. You will influence technical direction, mentor junior developers, and contribute to a codebase built on Feature-Sliced Design, headless UI primitives, and a custom design system.ย
Key Responsibilities
  • Gather requirements from subject matter experts (including defence and military specialists), design user flows, and deliver working software;ย
  • Architect and build complex, interactive React/TypeScript applications, geospatial interfaces, editors, data-dense views, and AI-integrated workflows;ย
  • Design and maintain frontend state effectively, choosing the right patterns for client, server, and UI state;ย
  • Build and extend a custom design system with headless primitives, scoped styling, and design tokens;ย
  • Plan and conduct user studies (usability testing, A/B experiments, surveys) and use findings to iterate on designs;ย
  • Write tests at every level, unit, integration, and end-to-end; and participate in code reviews;ย
  • Present designs and demos to stakeholders; andย
  • Collaborate across disciplines, backend engineers, data scientists, and product managers, within an agile process.ย

Qualifications
Some individuals are less likely to apply for a job unless they consider they are a perfect match. At Larus Technologies, we welcome motivated individuals to our diverse and inclusive workplace. Thus, if you are excited about this role but do not have every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. ย
Expected qualifications include:
  • University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience;ย
  • Required to meet qualifications to obtain a Canadian Government security clearance (typically requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residency);ย
  • At least 2 years of professional frontend development experience;ย
  • Strong proficiency with React and TypeScript;ย
  • Experience with modern state management (Zustand, Redux Toolkit, or similar) and server state patterns (TanStack Query, SWR, or equivalent);ย
  • Experience with REST API integration and generated API clients;ย
  • Experience writing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests (Vitest or Jest, Testing Library, Playwright or Cypress);ย
  • Working knowledge of Git workflows and CI/CD pipelines;ย
  • Strong communicator comfortable gathering requirements from domain experts and presenting to both technical and non-technical audiences; andย
  • Genuine interest in the product, understanding what we're building and why.ย
Technical Skill Requirements, working knowledge of:ย
  • GIS/geospatial interfaces- ย MapLibre GL, Mapbox, Leaflet, or OpenLayers; GeoJSON and spatial analysis;ย
  • Rich text editors (TipTap, ProseMirror, Slate) or code editors (CodeMirror);ย
  • AI/ML-powered UX- Integrating LLM services, building chat interfaces, or designing human-in-the-loop features;ย
  • User research- Planning usability studies, A/B tests, or surveys and translating findings into design improvements;ย
  • Docker, Azure DevOps, or similar deployment and CI/CD platforms;ย
  • Familiarity with Python for cross-team collaboration;ย
Desired Higher-Level Skills:
These are not required, but will set you apart and open pathways to seniority:
  • Frontend architecture - modular methodologies (Feature-Sliced Design or similar), clear module boundaries, incremental migration planning;ย
  • Design system ownership - design tokens, accessible components, visual consistency across themes and responsive layouts;ย
  • UI/UX design and validation - wireframing and prototyping (Figma), designing and interpreting user studies, accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA);ย
  • Performance engineering - profiling React applications, bundle analysis, lazy loading, code splitting;ย
  • Technical communication - design diagrams, architecture decision records, documentation; andย
  • Security awareness - OWASP top 10 frontend vulnerabilities and secure development practices.ย
What You Can Expect
  • A collaborative team working on problems that matter in the defence and security domain;ย
  • A modern tech stack - React 19, TypeScript, Zustand, TanStack Query, Vite, MapLibre GL, TipTap, Playwright, and a custom design system;ย
  • A well-structured codebase following Feature-Sliced Design;ย
  • Opportunities to shape architecture and technical direction; andย
  • Room to grow into more experienced rolesย
Benefitsย
  • Competitive compensation package; $80,000-90,000
  • Comprehensive Health and Dental insurance package;ย
  • Competitive vacation and paid time off;ย
  • Company-sponsored team-building events; and
  • Learning and development opportunities.ย
