Job description

Survey Instrument Man- Responsible for the grading of construction layout . 

Essential Functions of the position:
Must be able to sit or stand for multiple hours
Must be proficient with a computer and various software
Must be able to work long hours, weekends and at home or telecommute as needed to
complete work
Must be able to work in outdoor environments and be exposed to heat, rain, cold, wind, and
other weather activities
Must be able to walk long distances.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Must be able to perform manual labor including but not limited to raking, shoveling,
chopping, hammering etc.
Must be able to wear required PPE as per safety manual and OSHA regulations.
The responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Verify the accuracy of survey data including measurements and calculations conducted at
survey sites.
Search legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain information about property
boundaries in areas to be surveyed.
Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of land or
land features, roadways, pipes, structures, ponds, and other items per plans and specifications.
Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys to describe,
certify, and assume liability for work performed.
Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents
related to surveys.
Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data to determine positions, shapes,
and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas
using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).
Record the results of surveys including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions
of land or land features, roadways, pipes, structures, ponds, and other items per plans and
specifications.
Coordinate findings with engineers, clients, Vallencourt personnel and others concerned with
projects.
Establish fixed points for use in making maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments

Train assistants and helpers, and direct their work in such activities as performing surveys or
drafting maps.
Adjust surveying instruments to maintain their accuracy
Plan and conduct ground surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, and other
geodetic measurements.
Chop, cut and saw trees, bushes, and other debris in order to establish line of site for
surveying or layout purposes
Maintain survey and GPS equipment used for both surveying and heavy equipment.
Stake and grade layout for land or land features, roadways, pipes, structures, ponds, and other
items per plans and specifications.
Transfer information collected into electronic form and distribute to interested personnel.
