Job description

CNC Machinist – High Performance / Motorsports

$25 – $40/hr (DOE)

About Fortin Racing, Inc.

Located in San Diego, Fortin Racing, Inc. is a premier drivetrain manufacturer for off-road race and recreational vehicles. A family-owned business with over 50 years of history, we design, engineer, and CNC machine all of our products in our modern 10,000 sq. ft. facility in El Cajon.

Fortin began building transaxles for off-road race cars in the early 1970s and has evolved into a leader in high-performance drivetrain and steering components—manufactured to aerospace-level tolerances.

We are a small, agile team of 18 employees who work directly with customers throughout the design and manufacturing process. Our size allows us to move quickly, adapt to design changes, and maintain an uncompromising focus on quality and customer service.

Position Summary

We are seeking a CNC Machinist to join our team building state-of-the-art drivetrain components for high-performance and motorsports applications.

This is not a production-only role—you’ll be working on precision, performance-critical parts where quality, accuracy, and craftsmanship matter. We’re looking for individuals who are driven, curious, and want to grow, especially those interested in learning programming and advanced machining techniques.

What You’ll Work On

  • High-performance drivetrain components
  • Tight-tolerance, precision-machined parts
  • Low-volume, high-quality production and development work
  • Projects where performance and durability are critical

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC lathes, vertical mills, and horizontal mills (3 & 4 axis)
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T
  • Select tooling, workholding, and machining strategies
  • Perform first article inspections and in-process quality checks
  • Edit CNC programs and make adjustments at the machine
  • Maintain tight tolerances and ensure the highest level of quality
  • Troubleshoot machining and tooling issues
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years CNC machining experience (mills and/or lathes)
  • Strong understanding of machining fundamentals, feeds/speeds, and materials
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T
  • Experience holding tight tolerances
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in your work
  • Self-motivated and reliable

Growth & Advancement

This is a shop where you can level up your skillset. We are specifically looking for machinists who:

  • Want to learn CNC programming and toolpath strategy
  • Are interested in process improvement and efficiency
  • Take initiative and want more responsibility over time
  • Thrive in a performance-driven environment

Preferred (But Not Required)

  • Experience editing G-code
  • CAM software experience (Mastercam, Fusion 360, etc.)
  • Experience with 4th axis machining
  • Background in motorsports, automotive, or high-performance parts

Why This Role Is Different

  • Work on exciting, performance-driven projects
  • Be part of developing advanced drivetrain technology
  • Opportunity to grow into programming and process ownership
  • Work in a small, agile team where your impact is visible

Compensation & Benefits

  • $25 – $40/hr depending on experience and capability
  • Overtime opportunities
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Health benefits
  • Retirement plan with company matching
  • Long-term growth opportunities
