Performs skilled inspections of private and public facilities for discrepancies ofmalfunctions that could lead to a fire; require extensive experience in fire prevention.

Essential Functions:
  • Conducts inspections and serves notice of violations of local ordinances and state laws.
  • Inspect all premises and buildings as often as possible.
  • Identifies hazardous conditions and educates the public pertaining to fire prevention & safety.
  • Conducts fire drills in schools & in public institutions.
  • Supervises installation of flammable liquid tanks.
  • Surveys blueprints of new constructions & remodeling permits.
  • Follows up on all citizen complaints.
  • Conducts joint inspections with other departments.
  • Checks automatic extinguishers and closing devices to ensure working properly & maintains fire prevention
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of all current prevention principles.
  • Knowledge of all Village of Maywood ordinances and state & federal laws pertaining to fire prevention and the placement of hydrants and water mains.
  • Skilled in interpretation of all reports coupled with the ability to make effective recommendations on prevention of future fires.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals from all facets of the public and village.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of building, electrical, mechanical & fire codes.
  • Related experience & knowledge of best practices in building inspections and application of fire and life safety codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and apply knowledge of the application codes to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • • High School diploma or GED required, with some college• 3 years of work experience and training related to fire prevention, fire science, building codes, code• enforcement of construction and/or fire codes.
Special Requirements, Licenses or Certifications:
  • • Must possess a Fire Inspector I Certification (or OSFM equivalent) through the Office of State Fire Marshall (Illinois) and other applicable State Fire Marshall Certifications.
  • • Possess or obtain NFPA Plan Review certification or equivalent.
  • • State of IL Class “B” Driver’s License.
Work environment/Physical Demands:

Work is primarily performed independently in the field with minimal amounts of office time completing requiredpaperwork. Majority of inspections are on a yearly schedule; however, special inspections may be ordered by the Fire Chief. Work is frequently performed on-site at various industrial, commercial, multi-family, and other publicoccupancies. Some work is performed in an office setting and frequent driving of a vehicle is required. Occasionally, the employee is required to work in outside weather conditions during the inspection of various developments andconstruction sites. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can occasionally include greater noise levels.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands & arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, see, and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs.
