Based at our flagship plant just south of Birmingham, AL, we are hiring a Mining Engineer. In this role, you will collaborate with the Mine Manager, Operations Manager, and Division Mining and Geology group to develop effective short to mid-term mining sequencing to optimize operations and the mine's lifespan. This role also supports the divisional mine planning team with long-term, life-of-mine planning. The Senior Mining Engineer works to develop mine plans, ensuring their implementation through monthly surveying using GPS systems. In addition, this role oversees the monthly reconciliation process for both internal and external material movement and conducts advanced analyses of this movement. You will also process capital expenditure requests for the mining department.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Mine Management and Division support personnel to extract minerals, considering factors such as safety, operational costs, deposit characteristics, overburden depth, and surrounding strata.

  • Plan, coordinate, and participate in continuous mine studies to optimize the haulage fleet. Review data with the Operations Engineer and Mine Manager to make recommendations for improvements, type and capacity of haulage equipment (e.g., excavators, front-end loaders, trucks), and labor utilization.

  • Under the Mining Manager's oversight, lay out and direct mine operations, including the location and position of excavation benches and access roads, with the goal of achieving competency within one year.

  • Under the Mining Manager's supervision, design and coordinate all ore drilling and blasting activities, aiming to acquire the necessary skills within one year.

  • Ensure a steady supply of crude ore for processing plants.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related technical field such as Civil or Geotechnical.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting a mining operation.

Environment:

  • The role involves sitting for up to 50% of work time and standing/walking for up to 50% of work time.

  • Up to 10% travel may be required.

Skills and Attributes Requirements:

  • Proven ability to identify the need for, justify, and implement improvement processes.

  • Knowledge of ArcGIS is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and effectively use Deswik Mine Planning Software.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google sheets.

  • Proven ability to learn and effectively use GPS systems for surveying.

  • Ability to obtain Part 107 drone license

  • Demonstrated capability to provide support to Operations Management by monitoring production data, creating graphs, and tracking equipment data through OEM-supplied software.
