Hl7 Integration Developer information

What does an HL7 Integration Developer do?

An HL7 Integration Developer specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining interfaces that allow healthcare systems to exchange data using HL7 standards. They work closely with hospitals, clinics, and software vendors to ensure patient information flows smoothly and securely between various electronic health record (EHR) systems. Their responsibilities also include troubleshooting integration issues, implementing new data exchange solutions, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. Strong knowledge of HL7 protocols, healthcare IT systems, and programming languages is essential for this role.

What are some common challenges faced by HL7 Integration Developers when working with multiple healthcare systems?

HL7 Integration Developers often encounter challenges related to varying interpretations of HL7 standards across different healthcare systems. Each hospital or vendor may customize HL7 messages, requiring developers to adapt interfaces and handle exceptions. Additionally, managing data consistency and ensuring secure, real-time data exchange can be complex due to legacy systems or limited documentation. Effective communication with clinical, technical, and vendor teams is essential to troubleshoot issues and deliver seamless integrations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HL7 Integration Developer?

To excel as an HL7 Integration Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, C#, or Python), in-depth knowledge of HL7 messaging standards, and experience with healthcare interoperability. Familiarity with integration engines such as Mirth Connect, Cloverleaf, or Rhapsody, and relevant certifications like HL7 or FHIR, are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring seamless data exchange, maintaining compliance, and supporting efficient healthcare workflows.

What is the difference between Hl7 Integration Developer vs Hl7 Interface Analyst?

First Databank, Inc. (FDB) is currently seeking an Advanced Integration Engineer (Epic) who is responsible forย designing, developing, deploying, and supporting secure, scalable healthcare interoperability solutions across major EHR platforms, including Epic, Meditech, and Oracle Cerner. This role owns end-to-end interface delivery and production reliability for HL7 v2 messaging, FHIR R4 APIs/services, SMART on FHIR workflows, and EHR application registration.ย

The position partners with client IT teams, EHR analysts, and internal engineering/product teams to translate clinical and operational needs into robust technical integrations that meet quality, compliance, and performance standards.ย

The position will be based out of the Carmel, IN office and follows a hybrid work model, with an expectation to work onsite at least three days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead design, development, and lifecycle management of integrations with Epic, Meditech, and Oracle Cerner.ย

  • Build andย maintainย interfaces using HL7 v2 standards (including ADT, ORM, ORU, SIU, and MDM) and related healthcare message workflows.ย

  • Design, implement, and support FHIR R4-based APIs and services for clinical and administrative data exchange.ย

  • Implement and support SMART on FHIR launch and OAuth2 authorization flows, including scopes and token lifecycle management.ย

  • Support Epic application registration workflows (including App Orchard processes, OAuth client setup, and environment onboarding).ย

  • Develop and support modern web services and APIs using technologies such as C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, .NET, and related frameworks.ย

  • Follow strong engineering practices using Git and GitHub workflows, including pull requests, branching strategies, and peer code reviews.ย

  • Own integration workstreams end-to-end: requirements gathering, technical design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.ย

  • Partner with client implementation teams to define interface specifications, data mappings, validation criteria, and go-live readiness plans.ย

  • Develop transformation logic, error-handling patterns, and resiliency controls across integration pipelines.ย

  • Create andย maintainย integration documentation, including interface control documents, runbooks, support guides, and architecture diagrams.ย

  • Implement proactive monitoring, alerting, and observability for interfaces and FHIR services; drive rapid root-cause analysis and incident resolution.ย

  • Ensure integration solutions align with security and compliance requirements, including HIPAA, least-privilege access, and secure data handling practices.ย

  • Collaborate across engineering, product, and operations to prioritizeย integrationย roadmaps and resolve cross-functional dependencies.ย

  • Provide technical leadership across integration initiatives, including architecture guidance, delivery planning, and risk management.ย

  • Mentor peers on interoperability standards, implementation approaches, and engineering best practices.ย

  • Lead technical design and code review sessions;ย establishย and reinforce development standards for integration and API services.ย

  • Apply AI-assisted engineering practices using coding agents (such as Claude Code, Cursor, and similar tools) to improve delivery speed and code quality.ย

  • Drive spec-driven AI development by translating requirements into clear technical specifications, acceptance criteria, and implementation plans that can be executed reliably by AI-enabled workflows.ย

Required Skills:

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, client-focused, and evolving delivery environment.ย

  • Ability to work independently while leading cross-functional integration efforts.ย

  • Excellent problem-solving skills for diagnosing message, mapping, and API workflow issues.ย

  • Strong communicationย and stakeholder management skills across engineering, implementation, and client teams.ย

  • Commitment to high-quality documentation and disciplined operational ownership.ย

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence architecture and delivery outcomes without direct authority.ย

  • Ability to delegate effectively, coach junior engineers, and drive accountability across multi-team initiatives.ย
