Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield will host an Interpretive Media Steward.
Wilson's Creek was the first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River, and the site of the death of Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union general killed in action. The costly Southern victory on August 10, 1861, focused national attention on the war in Missouri. Wilson's Creek NB commemorates and interprets the battle within the context of the war west of the Mississippi River. This Interpretive Media Steward is an AmeriCorps position that will collaborate with staff and volunteers to improve and expand on non-personal interpretive services available to the public when planning a trip, completing research, or visiting the battlefield. These services will increase reach of the story of the people and events at Wilson's Creek.
The individual placement will work in collaboration with permanent staff, bringing skills in design and communication, to develop products for multiple audiences. Project will include updating information that has not seen significant updates in over a decade and creating new products to engage audiences following best practices of 21st Century Interpretation and design theory.
Description of Duties:
โ€ข Design 3 waysides following a provided template. Content of the panels will be written by staff. Illustrations, images, and maps will be provided by NPS staff.
โ€ข Develop, record, and edit audio descriptions for interpretive panels of the visitor center exhibits.
o Transcribe text for each panel.
o Following best practices of ease of access in media, develop descriptions of images and illustrations on the panel.
o Develop a script for each panel utilizing text and image audio descriptions.
o Record and edit the audio for each panel.
o Work with NPS staff to publish audio descriptions to the website and app.
โ€ข Digitally catalogue 300 museum artifacts, letters, or photographs that tell our nation's exceptional history.
o Work with museum staff to pull items from the collection and take photographs of each item.
o Collaborate with partners at the Library Center to upload photos to the virtual museum.
โ€ข Assist in the organization of the database of stored photos
o In collaboration with other staff, arrange image folders to improve searchability.
o Properly tag and store images on the shared drive.
Qualifications:
โ€ข United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
โ€ข At least 17 years of age
โ€ข Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
โ€ข Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
โ€ข Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
โ€ข Interested in preserving and communicating important information and stories related to the history of the United States.
โ€ข Speak, read, and write in English
โ€ข Able to use a computer and familiar with programs such as the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.
โ€ข Able to work well independently and as part of a team and communicate needs and challenges effectively.
โ€ข Able to manage time to meet project deadlines.

Time Requirements:
โ€ข Typically, this position is expected to serve [Monday] to [Friday], but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
โ€ข Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
โ€ข Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
โ€ข Site overview/orientation and the history of the battle, associated persons, and larger context of Civil War west of the Mississippi River.
โ€ข Training related to the Civil War, Basics of Interpretation, and interpretive media through Eppley courses.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
