They respond to 911 calls, assess patients, perform basic medical procedures, and transport patients to hospitals for further treatment. EMTs play a critical role in the emergency medical services (EMS) system and are often the first healthcare providers to arrive at the scene of an accident or medical emergency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMT, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EMT, you need strong knowledge of emergency medical procedures, basic life support, and typically must hold state EMT certification. Excellent communication, composure under pressure, and teamwork are vital soft skills for responding effectively in emergency situations. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering rapid, lifesaving care and ensuring patient and team safety in high-stress environments.

What are some common challenges EMTs face during their shifts, and how can new hires prepare for them?

EMTs often encounter high-stress situations, unpredictable schedules, and physically demanding tasks.
