What jobs can a 14-year-old legally do?

A 14-year-old can legally work in a variety of jobs, such as babysitting, dog walking, lawn mowing, retail positions, or working at certain restaurants and grocery stores. However, there are federal and state restrictions on the number of hours and types of work allowed for minors. They cannot work in hazardous occupations and are usually limited to part-time hours, especially during the school year. It's important to check your local labor laws, as they may have additional requirements or permits for working at this age.

What types of jobs are typically available to 14-year-olds, and what should applicants expect in terms of responsibilities and supervision?

At age 14, most job opportunities are entry-level and may include positions such as grocery store bagger, fast food crew member, babysitter, lawn care assistant, or retail helper. These roles often involve tasks like stocking shelves, cleaning, serving customers, or basic food preparation. Federal and state labor laws require that 14-year-olds work limited hours and have close supervision, especially during school months. Applicants can expect supportive environments designed to help them learn workplace basics, develop responsibility, and build communication skills, all while balancing work with their education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 14-year-old in entry-level jobs, and why are they important?

To thrive in entry-level jobs as a 14-year-old, you need basic math and reading skills, a strong work ethic, and any required work permits for minors. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems or basic computer use is helpful, depending on the job. Reliability, communication, and a willingness to learn are standout soft skills for young workers. These qualities help ensure a positive work experience, build trust with employers, and lay the foundation for future employment opportunities.
