Job description

Cottage Hospital is seeking a Health Information Management (HIM) Manager to lead the operations, staff, and overall performance of the HIM department. This role is responsible for the maintenance, accuracy, and completeness of all patient medical records, ensuring compliance with Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Conditions of Participation, HIPAA, and all applicable federal and state regulations.
The HIM Manager oversees the collection, storage, retrieval, and appropriate use of patient health information across both electronic and paper systems. This includes managing release of information processes, record retention and destruction, registry requirements, and ensuring data privacy and security standards are consistently met.
This position supervises HIM staff, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, workflow efficiency, and productivity standards are maintained. The Manager provides training, implements policies and procedures, and drives continuous improvement within the department.
In collaboration with medical staff, administration, IT, and Fiscal Services, the HIM Manager ensures that documentation supports accurate coding, billing, and reimbursement. The role also involves analyzing health data, monitoring chart completion, and generating reports to support quality care and operational decision-making.
The ideal candidate brings strong attention to detail, knowledge of healthcare information systems, and experience with coding standards such as ICD-10 and CPT. Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills are essential to succeed in this fast-paced healthcare environment.
