What is HIL testing?

A HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) Testing job involves validating and verifying embedded systems by simulating real-world scenarios using hardware and software models. Engineers in this role develop test cases, automate testing procedures, and analyze system behavior to ensure reliability and performance. HIL testing is commonly used in industries like automotive, aerospace, and industrial automation to test control systems before deployment.

What does a HIL testing engineer do?

A typical day in HIL Testing involves designing and setting up test benches, running simulations of real-world scenarios on hardware prototypes, analyzing results, and documenting any issues or anomalies found. You'll work closely with hardware designers, embedded software engineers, and project managers to develop test cases and troubleshoot control systems. The role often requires managing multiple test cycles, adapting to evolving specifications, and participating in team meetings to review progress. This hands-on environment combines a mix of technical work, problem-solving, and collaborative communication to ensure the proper functioning and safety of complex electronic systems before they are deployed in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for HIL testing?

To thrive in HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) Testing, a strong background in electrical engineering, embedded systems, and test automation is essential, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with tools such as dSPACE, NI LabVIEW, MATLAB/Simulink, and knowledge of real-time simulation platforms are highly valued, and certifications in software or hardware testing can be advantageous. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are important soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams. These competencies ensure accurate validation of complex control systems and help deliver reliable, high-quality products in industries like automotive and aerospace.

How to perform Hil Testing?

Performing Hil Testing involves preparing the test environment, executing the test plan, and analyzing the results to verify hardware or system performance. It often requires knowledge of testing tools, proper documentation, and adherence to testing protocols to ensure accurate assessment of the system's functionality.

Job description

LCS Defense is seeking a Software & Systems Development Engineer to design, develop, and maintain the software infrastructure that enables automated testing of next-generation cloud hardware platforms.
This is not a traditional Systems Test Engineering role focused on writing test plans, TEMPs, or test procedures. Instead, this position is responsible for building and maintaining the test framework, automation, and hardware/software interfaces used by engineering teams to validate complex hardware systems within a dedicated development laboratory.
The ideal candidate is a software engineer with experience developing automation, hardware interfaces, embedded or low-level software, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test environments.
________________________________________
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop, and maintain software-based test frameworks used to validate next-generation hardware platforms.
• Develop software that interfaces directly with hardware devices, instruments, and systems under test.
• Build and maintain hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing environments supporting engineering development.
• Develop automation, utilities, scripts, and software tools that improve engineering productivity.
• Create software interfaces, drivers, and communication layers between test infrastructure and hardware devices.
• Support integration, debugging, troubleshooting, and validation of hardware/software systems.
• Collaborate closely with hardware, FPGA, embedded software, and cloud software engineers.
• Maintain laboratory software infrastructure supporting engineering development activities.
• Participate in code reviews and software design discussions.
• Support continuous improvement of automated testing capabilities.
________________________________________
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong programming experience in Rust (preferred) and/or Python.
• Experience developing software that interfaces directly with hardware.
• Experience with hardware/software integration.
• Experience with Linux development environments.
• Experience developing software used for automation or engineering infrastructure.
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.
• Familiarity with Git version control.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience developing hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test environments.
• Embedded software development experience.
• Experience writing device drivers or hardware interface software.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling.
• Experience with AWS cloud services.
• Experience with Bash scripting.
• Experience working with FPGA-based hardware systems.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks.
