Job description

Description A Seasonal Laborer is a temporary position within the County service. RESIDENCY- Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the application: Livingston County The work involves responsibility for performing routine physical/unskilled duties of the construction trades, requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous tasks indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. A Laborer is responsible for assisting skilled workers in performing a variety of tasks such as road construction and maintenance, building construction and maintenance, landscaping, buildings and grounds maintenance, cleaning of fleet vehicles, painting, and any other cleaning or minor repair work required.

Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this class. The work is performed under direct supervision, or activities are subject to frequent inspection, of the assigned supervisor. A Laborer does related work as assigned.

Examples of Duties Operates power driven tools and equipment such as saws, compressors, drills, mixers, pumps, mowers, and string trimmers; Performs general clean-up work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass and weeds, shoveling snow, and assisting in collection of rubbish and litter from lands and facilities; May assist with the maintenance or construction of roads, streets, and utility and drainage systems by digging and backfilling trenches, spreading asphalt, sand, and gravel; May assist skilled and semi-skilled workers by hauling materials, assisting with work set up, lifting, holding things in place, and performing other duties of a similar character; Uses hand tools such as shovels, scythes, forks, and rakes in grounds maintenance and beautification work; May assist in the preparation, laying out, and maintenance of athletic fields and areas designed for beautification by clearing, grading, reseeding, weeding, and lining; Loads and unloads trucks and stacks materials and supplies; May act as flag person on highway jobs and/or direct trucks at loading and unloading sites; Assists in erecting or assembling snow fences, barricades, picnic tables, and recreation equipment; May perform general maintenance and cleaning activities; May operate light automotive equipment[1]; and Performs other related duties as assigned. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ability to get along with others; ability to understand and follow simple oral instructions; ability to follow simple oral or written instructions; ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting and bending; ability to stoop, bend, and kneel; ability to lift heavy weights: 50 pounds for County Service; ability to perform activities in a variety of environments, temperatures, and weather conditions; physical endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. [1] Light automotive equipment, for the purposes of these minimum qualifications includes, pickup truck, pickup truck snowplows, small rollers, small wheel loaders, 1-ton utility trucks, small flatbed or dump trucks, 40-HP or larger tractor mowers, or forklift.

Laborer - NC in all divisions Supplemental Information Appropriate licensure must be maintained throughout employment. A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.

Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR COUNTY SERVICE: Applicants must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds.
