Description
The City of Cypress is seeking a highly-skilled and professional
Associate Engineer to perform complex engineering work in the planning and design of streets, water, drainage, sewer, traffic systems, buildings, parks and other public works facilities. Incumbents are responsible for day-to-day professional and sub-professional engineering activities of the Engineering Division, relating to both private development and City Public Works projects.
The recruitment is open on a continuous basis until filled, with the first review of applications on July 6.
Example of Duties
- Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates and contract documents for capital improvement and maintenance projects related to streets, sewers, storm drains, water systems, parks, structures, and building modifications.
- Administer construction contracts; perform some project inspection.
- Design and prepare specifications, cost estimates and contract documents related to the construction and maintenance of a variety of traffic, street lighting, and traffic control projects.
- Coordinate projects with contractors, utility companies and other public agencies.
- Establish design procedures; interpret the application of design criteria; check plans and specifications for accuracy of design and completeness
- Prepare complex engineering reports.
- Supervise design work of subordinate staff.
- Review and check subdivision tract and parcel maps, lot line adjustments, easement deeds, and related engineering plans and calculations for grading, on-site improvements, streets, sewers, storm drains and other improvements to ensure adherence to City policies and standards and the proper inclusion of necessary public works in private developments.
- Provide technical information to personnel in other departments and the public; provide technical engineering support to the Public Works Construction Inspector.
- Act as staff support to the Traffic Commission.
- Investigate community complaints and prepare reports recommending appropriate action.
- Assist in budget preparation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Experience & Education
- Three years of responsible professional engineering experience, comparable to the level of Assistant Engineer, including experience in designing streets, water, sewer, drainage and/or traffic signal systems AND
- A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- A valid License as a Professional Civil Engineer from the State of California Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors is desirable.

Paid Vacation - All full-time employees accrue 80 vacation hours per year, up to a maximum of 160 hours at eleven years of employment.
Sick Leave - Eight hours per month are accrued by full-time employees for sick leave. There is unlimited accumulation, and the City has an annual payoff plan for unused sick leave, plus a payoff plan upon termination.
Holidays - 11 holidays per year plus 9 hours of floating holiday.
Tuition Reimbursement - $1,500 per fiscal year.
Health Insurance - The City pays 100% of the employee's group insurance premium, which includes medical, dental, vision, life, long and short term disability. Dependent/ additional benefits are available, a portion of which is paid by the City.
Retirement - Cypress is a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Employees hired prior to 7/1/10 are responsible for paying 3% of the Employee Contribution. Employees hired after 7/1/10 are responsible for paying 6% of the Employee Contribution. The plan includes the following options: 2% at 55, one year highest compensation, 1959 survivor's benefit and post retirement survivor continuance. Cypress is not a member of the Social Security System.
For candidates not currently employed by a CalPERS Agency or exceeding six months of separation, retirement benefits offered will conform to the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) after a January 1, 2013 date of hire.
Retirement Health Savings Plan - $125 monthly contribution.
Deferred Compensation - A voluntary program is also available.
